We are thinking of going to Spain for 3 weeks over Christmas and New year next year (19)

Any tips or suggestions? Anything we need to sort out before we go? Anything to watch out for or avoid?

Thank you

Hi Mongoose, It's 3000 miles for you to drive to southern Spain and back again - and that will make a hole in your three weeks. If you want to shorten the drive by taking a ferry to Bilbao you will need to book that (and your chosen campsite)  as soon as bookings open.

With limited time available I personally have always left  the caravan at home at that time of year and have many times booked flights instead -   always somewhere other than southern Spain.

I've spent last two Dec/Jan in Spain, although in a house! All the campsites that are open are full, and booked up well in advance. CMHC and CCC do organised trips that fill sites, plus all the other northern nationals. Lots of m/homes parked up in carparks.

Get there as early in Dec as poss to settle in, as Spain loves a holiday: Xmas, New Year and Three Kings means some weeks the shops are closed 2-3 days. Lots of bars, restaurants and shops will be closed in tourist areas until spring. Caravanners don't spend enough money! The weather can be great, 20 degrees or more. Or it can snow/sleet/rain. Night time is cold in comparison to day and you need a variety of clothes to suit. Lots of books, DVD, etc for evenings.

I love it, just chill, and walk and cycle.

I am with ET and Deleted User User.  Not only is it a long way but the weather en route can be dreadful.  A cheapo flight and accommodation would be my choice.

My neighbours are in Barbados, my postman is on a beach on Goa, my Canadian cousin is in Cuba, my daughter is recently back from New Zealand, and I am wishing I was back in Kerala. What is the attraction of winter Caravanning in Spain? Is it over rated?

I have never looked into costs of wintering anywhere so I don't know anything about it, but isn't it spending months in a caravan cheaper than the other destinations you mention?

Hi Mongoose, I was going to comment when you first posted but felt it was maybe a bit negative however, encouraged by others, what I was going to say is that we are not long back from a two week holiday in Mexico.

The point of this is that we went with our MH buddies who, for the last three years have been in Spain but were fed up with the poor weather they had so are not going this year till the end of March.

Cost wise the Mexico holiday was £3200 for two and this was fully inclusive in a 5 star resort. We love our van holidays but this was a very nice change and, whilst a longer trip like you are considering may be more cost effective, the costs are quite comparable pro rata.
