Hi. Do people have any payment options they prefer to use such as PayPal or paying just by cash. We are a cl Resthaven Farm Cl Site and are wondering if we set up PaypaP for the site

We have always paid via cash or cheques. I suppose PayPal would be ok, especially if you take a deposit.

Not a fan of pay pal, but we have used bank transfer to pay a deposit once, then paid the amount in full when we stayed the second time, Cash is fine for short stay, but wouldn't like to carry hundreds.

I prefer to pay by cheque, or even by credit/debit card if the site has the facility to accept such. Otherwise it's by cash, but like cariadon, only for short stays of upto a week.

    Use paypal regularly.

I used to have a check book many years ago! Thought they had done away with them.

Given your size would suggest cash or bank transfer are probably your best options.

You could go all out and get a contactless card machine but suspect the running cost would not make financial sense.

I have paid for CL or small sites sites a few times via paypal, usually the day before we leave home. Many people have paypal accounts I would have thought.... Its no different to buying on ebay. I can't remember the last time I wrote a cheque, maybe 3 years ago now.. otherwise cash.

If you don't want to get into paying by credit or debit cards I think PayPal would be an excellent option as it's fairly simple and I assume more cost effective for you. Are cheques no longer being phased out?

They were to be finished in October 2018 but that has changed and clearing of cheques is being improved as the government decided that they still served a need for many

Even a food van at a festival  will have a mobile card reader these days

I’m happy to pay by credit/debit card or PayPal. Cash can be a faff and cheque payments, although OK, seem such a long winded process these days.

But a food van at a festival will have a very high turnover and would probably make more money in a weekend than a cl would in a year?!

Card readers are expensive tools and replacements if broken are moreso.

Paypal would be my option, easier and cheaper to run

There was an article in the paper the other day about a big issue seller who had gone down the route of getting a contactless card reader. Can't say it would be my first choice to present my card for reading / cloning to someone stood in the street, but he reckoned it had paid for itself fairly quickly.

We pay by cash, if someone wants a deposit then my wife has a cheque book she can use but I have none with my account.

I'm willing to be educated as we do not have a PayPal account, but I thought we could still pay electronically by card into someone who does have PayPal, therefore it's just an additional way to pay.

I guess some CL owners prefer cash as it simplifies their income tax.

Not a fan of PayPal, open to too many scams.  My preference is BAC’s particularly if owners are not around much

Bank transaction fees on cheques etc can soon add up.

I'd be happy with PayPal or other methods.

Why would cash simplify their income tax?  As a tax consultant and ex HMRC Inspector the phrase "cash trade scope for deflection" springs to mind.  I rarely pay cash for anything these days.  Card readers are relatively inexpensive to operate or web based merchants services are good too.

Your response eurortraveller implies that they're taking cash and not declaring it!

Card only for me. Never carry a cheque book and am surprised anyone would accept a cheque now that there is no guarantee card. Never carry much cash either.

Although I have a paypal account I only use it as a last resort for some online purchases.

My business is subject to money laundering rules and we never, ever, accept cash payments. You will find the banks are becoming very sniffy about accepting cash deposits, for the same reasons.

How anyone can operate a succesful business without accepting cards beats me.

Many Cls. window cleaners and similar do nicely on cash payment, My window cleaner works a 3 day week and probably makes over £30k a year.

Strangely enough we were asked for a cheque the other week to pay a deposit on a CL, had to remember where we had put the cheque book as its been years since we used it.

Paypal, card, cash, bacs or cheque makes no difference to us as long as we know before hand. There is no use asking for a cheque once we have left home as we don't carry the cheque book.

Although I rarely give a cheque these days, I do get one or two of them from time to time, so some do find it convenient.

Many if not most CL owners accept cheques without bother, we've found.

Was that for a site near Lincoln, TG. I think we're going to the same one and sent a cheque as requested, and it's normal practice for us to do so when send deposits.

OH always has a cheque book somewhere in her handbag....amazing what women keep in their handbags!......so we prefer to pay by  cheque once on site.  Or cash is OK as long as we know a site wants cash, as we rarely carry much cash.

Otherwise, if a deposit is needed, we prefer to use a bank transfer, or paypal, having to send a cheque is just unnecessary extra expense.

    Come on people, its 2018!

I am a dinosaur but my kids dont even carry cash or cards, if it cant be paid from their current Android or Apple then they dont use it.

Cheques are on their way out followed by cash.

Its time to go digital, even I have started swiping things!

The OP runs a CL not a bank or a shop. I expect other CL owners could suggest the most popular or easy payment methods. If anyone lives in the SW they'd discover the delights of poor phone signals etc and the reality that  things aren't always quite so much in the digital age. wink

I use to as a kid, but at your age should you really be doing that surprisedwink

I don't expect a CL to have multi payment options, and usually settle up with cash a day or so after we have settled in but we can cover just about all options of payment required.

My brother in law owns a card machine for his business, it costs him something like £50 a month. I suspect nothing like viable for a CL.

I'd only think of paying a CL with cash ..... cheques just create the hassle of having to go to the bank to pay them in, & I suspect most CL owners have better things to do with their time.

I don't generally carry cash either ..... I withdraw  £50 from the cash machine & get some more as & when I've spent it, that might be a week or a month. But if we're going to a CL I withdraw enough to pay them in cash.

A CL doesn't need to bother with a card machine. A web based factor such as operated by Worldpay is £10 per month plus a transaction fee which works out cheaper than paying cheques into a bank account.

And assuming they operate through a business bank account one of the most expensive ways of paying money in is by cash!
