Camping Sites Pompeii

We are heading for Pompeii and Herculaneum hoping to arrive early May.  Can anyone help with sites in Pompeii.     Have checked some out but none seem to 'grab' me at the moment.    Has anyone used the Camping Pompei in the camper stop book?      Also any views as to whether we would be better to look say around Salerno and travel to the sites and if so how convenient are the trains/bus to get to Pompeii as we have a motorhome and prefer to leave it and use public transport to get around.   Thanks for any help.

Haven't taken a MH to either of these places but have visited them while staying on the Amalfi coast. I remember that the public transport was very good in both of these areas. Early May will be a perfect time to visit them before it gets too hot.

MH's are not allowed along the coast road (Amalfi drive) but it is getting a bus and doing it as it really is stunning.

Hope you get some other replies that can offer more info, have a great trip what ever you do and please come back with your experience to help others in the future.

Visited the area on a package holiday so no idea on sites but as TG says public transport is good.

We went to Amalfi one day and whilst taking a pic of the beach and town a Sweedish car and caravan passed by!

We have visited Pompeii but not with the caravan or motorhome. There are several campsite right opposite the entrance to the ruins. However the pitches don't seem very large and hardly the place for a longer stay, at least that was my observation. I have heard good reports of this campsite http://campingzeus.it/ which a little further out and one stop on the train. The train also gives you access to Sorrento where I am sure there would be onward transport to Amalfi. From Sorrento you can also take the boat across to Capri which is a nice day trip.

There are a number of sites near Salerno and a good train service to Pompeii (then on to Naples).  Yes, get the bus for the drive round the Amalfi coast.  Don't forget, you will find ACSI wortwhile at that time of the year.

Thanks David re Camping Zeus.   I have looked at this site and read reviews on the ACSI, TripAdvisor and their own website and as such not a site we would particularly want to go to especially as we want to be in the area for about 5 days - want to combine the historical sites with visits to the Amalfi Coast and a trip to Capri.

Thanks to you too Comeyras I think we will look at sites near Salerno and take the train to Pompeii and Herculaneum unless a recommendation for a site in Pompeii materialises..

I think I suggested the wrong siteembarassed Have a look at this review on Camping Spartacus. Russell whose website it is has travelled a lot in Italy. You may still be of the same opinion as Zeus having read the review but it might be worth looking at!!!

There is an excellent train service from Sorento to Naples which  stops at both sites. Pompeii is very close to the ruins whereas Herculaneum is a walk through the town. Cheap and convenient. Have done both on separate visits - hotel and cruise, not Motorhome.

From Sorento you can also do a day trip to the beautiful Island of Capri. Better to stay in Capri if you are hotelling but if day trip then head straight to Anacapri (bus or taxi) and do Capri town on the way back. That whole area, Pompeii included, is extremely popular.

Thanks everyone for your help and views.    After much 'surfing' and investigation will probably give Fortuna Village Pompeii a go as it is a low season discount ACSI site too.   As we want to go Sorrento and the Amalfi coast and Naples it's sort of in the middle for convenience.   The reviews are OK and we will just keep reminding ourselves we are in southern Italy and be grateful for hopefully the sunshine, food and beautiful scenery - all which counteract lack of facilities and space!

    Thanks again

We stayed at Fortuna Village May/June 2016. Very tight pitches! Sun chairs in tandem between outfits! Very close to Pompeii ruins. Lots of eateries close. Supermarket down the main road. No water points, had to use filler hose from laundry sink for aquaroll??? Drove to Herculaneum, easy carpark, much better site than Pompeii in our opinion!

Thanks for your post olivegrower - seems as if I am back to the drawing board.    Following your post have looked at sights closer to Naples - we want to go to the main archaeological museum in Naples before heading for the sites anyway. I have found an ACSI site Camping Sant'Antonio - Vico Equense which looks promising.  Would appreciate any comments on this should anyone know of it.

    Thanks

If you're in Sorrento try the Cannelloni in this restaurant.....

    http://www.parrucchiano.com/en/

But the bars on the cliff overlooking the new harbour are best for pre dinner drinks, fantastic views of vesuvius as the sun goes down.....

Cant wait to get back there.......!

I looked at Camping San Antonio for a caravan then looked at the road down to it on Google Earth / Google Maps looks very tight but not impossible. Also been looking at Camping Blue Green nearer Sorrento

Hello Tigi - I looked at Camping San Antonio and then read reviews where the French ones were saying that the entrance is 'dangerous' so dismissed it.   Then like you looked at Camping Blue Green which seems to fit the bill but no ACSI low season discount and as we are in Italy for 10 weeks this makes a difference.   Have looked at Campsite Santa Fortunata which seems good too and they run a shuttle bus into Sorrento through the day - about 10 mins - 1 euro pp - and it seems it's easy to get to the sites and the Amalfi coast.

Thanks Tintent 115 for your information have made a note in my fast becoming copious notes for the area.   Sounds wonderful.
