Yes, we heard what sounded like an explosion here (Porthcawl) and then our windows shook!  My son rang me from Abergavenny and said that they were travelling along when their car started 'bouncing up and down'.  I heard  later that it was an earthquake!  surprised

Presumably they also have their own cars?  If so I think they reckon they are not so likely to use yours, but why it actually reduces the premium is still a mystery!

We are insured through Halifax, cannot remember who the actual insurer is.  They were quite a bit less than anyone else last year as there was a bribe to move to them, so we fully expected the premium to be bumped up this year, however the renewal was actually about £2.50 less.  I suppose that could be due to the car being a year older so worth less.

We also have a Smart car, but only a 2 seater, which DD is already insured on, and we are insured on her car, originally a cost saving measure.  We do swap cars quite often, particularly when she needs me to fix it or when it goes for service, but as she is about to have her first baby, the Smart will no longer be suitable for her, so we decided to  check what it would cost to put her on the Touareg, just for a dire emergency of course!

OH got some quotes on comparison sites, and came up with a quote, including DD, that was a couple of pounds less than our renewal, that was through BOS, so,  encouraged by that, she rang Halifax to ask them to quote.  The new insurer will be Co-operative Insurance.  The girl she spoke with could  not explain why it made it cheaper either.

Anyway, a happy outcome, but now DD is itching  to try it out.  I think I will need to hide the keys!

For the third day in a row we've had beautiful sunshine. at least for part of the time, and only a light rainshower during the night.  Drove south to Druridge Bay for an enjoyable walk on the sands. Spotted a few hundred geese flying over to the nature reserve ponds. Then onto Asda at Ashington to fill up with fuel and walk round the lake in Queen Elizabeth Park.

Enjoy your trip up to Moreton. Moulesy. You might just bump into AD there.

why, do you have a cavalier attitude to debt?

Age and health has nothing to do with it.

Everybody should make provisions for their partner whatever age, there is no guaranteed age of death.

Drinking first coffee of the day watching the wildlife out of the van window.  Another hard frost last night.  Normally in this part of planet earth 🌏 we have 3 or 4 frosts a winter, this year we have had dozens.  Beats rain though.  Off to NWT Cley this morning.  Enjoy your day all

true, after reading the link from Brue, the provision could be as simple as having a joint account to enable the other person to have access to money. When you are young, a will is for old people, but you soon realise it's not, so even if your assets are low or nil you should still make one.

I just checked my tax account online. It looks like it's been adjusted since the last time I checked. I think this must be because of increased earnings from Pizza Hut due to working extra hours. So instead of zero tax this year, it's now estimated as £8 tax. Next year is estimated at £140 tax. This is after taking into account marriage allowance.

Are there two different conversations going on here?  I keep reading posts and wanting to reply, and then they disappear or perhaps are edited.  I've got two versions of this thread on different tabs and on one I can see a post from Cariadon, to which I was about to reply, but can't see it on this version!

They can't tax your OAP cariadon. In my case they just tax other pensions instead. If you don't have these you don't get taxed. Although in any event the OAP is not enough on its own to get you above the threshold. As far as gifts from a family member. I would have though those exempt of tax. Not sure about the benifit in kind of providing living accommodation though.

The OAP is however taken into account Cariadon as part off overall income and you are taxed accordingly from another income source

Yes, it is all rather silly really. The OAP on its own is now not enough to pay tax on, if that's all you get. However, they can't actually tax you on it if you have other pensions or forms of income. So they just alter the code on those instead to gather the tax you would have paid on your OAP.

They get you in the end.☹️

They deduct my state pension from my gross allowances to work out my net allowance.

Yes that's correct. OH has 2 decent private pensions which he pays tax on but not OAP.

While I have a small private pension + OAP which combined still keeps me under the tax threshold, so because of this when we retired all our savings were put into my name.

However since then there has been a change in how much interest (joke) one can earn before tax so now not as relevant as before.

Got up to a beautiful morning here in North Wales, so donned boots and made the most of it.

Now back home and will have a spot of lunch before getting some jobs done in the kitchen, beading needs replacing and some new sealant needed in others.

Sorry, but nothing about MM in this post for people to reply to.frown

There is no gift tax in UK, and gifts do not count as income.

A benefit in kind can only come from an employer.

State pension IS  taxable, though paid gross as on its own is usually too low to attract tax,   so is added to any other income to calculate your final bill.  This can lead to confusion.

If your tax affairs are simple then usually everything is sorted via your code number.

If you have income which cannot be taxed at source then you will usually have to do a tax return.  For example, I have a pension from Norway which varies with the exchange rate, so I have to put all that on a tax return and pay the tax due later.  I prefer it that way as this keeps each year's figures totally separate and avoids any confusion.  I always did the same with expenses when I was employed, keeps things much simpler.

As far as I can make out, these so called tax accounts are only rough estimates and generally based on previous years, they are not necessarily the same as the eventual outcome.  Sometimes they are apparently wildly inaccurate.
