Advise on sites for Salzburg & Neuschwanstein

We are planning our trip to Croatia May/June. Travelling out we would like to visit Salzburg and on return (from Innsbruck) would like to visit Neuschwanstein Castle. Can anyone offer help on campsites. Will we be better staying in Germany for Salzburg and using public transport?  and looked at Fussen area for Neuschwanstein but know nothing of access etc to the sites, (our ‘van is 7.5 m ).A number of sites seem to be MH only . Any advise would be good.

For your return Camping Hopfensee is smart- do you want smart?  It's 5km. from Fussen  and 8 or 9 km. from  Neuschwandstein.

Why not stay in Austria for a visit to Salzburg? We have stayed here http://www.davidklyne.co.uk/camping_nord_sam.html a couple of times which is very convenient for for the City with a bus stop right outside the campsite. We have also stayed at Fussen but at the Stellplatz which is really for motorhomes.

We did the 'reverse' trip; Croatia first then Salzburg on the way home.

We stayed at Camping-Resort Allweglehen, near Berchtesgaden, and loved it. Bus into Salzburg took 20 minutes. Berchtesgaden itself is beautiful too.

Agree with eurotraveller, Camping Hopfensee near Fussen is a quality site (if a little on the expensive side) and handy for the Neuschwandstein

Both sites above will cater for your van, ours is 8.25metres. We did book before we went to advise we needed a larger pitch.

Last year on our return from Italy we stayed at 'Camping Reutte' an ACSI site just before crossing the Austrian/Bavarian border using the Fern pass, it's about 14km south of the castle and only 1.5km off the main road with easy access and a great restaurant but be aware of the 2 hour dinner break.

We chose this site because it's also within walking or cycling distance to the longest span footbridge in Europe, the 'Highline 179' and really worth a walk over.

Agree the Salzburg card is worth getting. We even managed to get into the science museum close to our hotel the day we were leaving at 9.15 am, just before the card expired.

I would love to return sometime and see the puppet opera.
