Our fortnightly black refuse is collected "free" as is our recycle bin ,but since last year garden refuse has had a charge of £35 which since October includes food waste except bones,(confusion)

To  deter  poachers  perhaps,  WN  ??

Like  the  Sheep  farmers in  Cumbria  etc  have  taken  to  trialling  bright very  long lasting  paint  with  tiny  microscopic  numbers  relevant  to  the  farm  in  the  paint.  Harder  for  the  light  fingered  ones  to  steal  &  sell  on  !!

The  Buyers  and / or  police  need  only  a  small  tubular  microscope  to  be  able  to  read  them.

Why do they want to light up the Tay?

It’s a Health and Safety Issue, so the elderly don’t fall in when they have been kicked out of the care homes!

One  day,  long  after  I'm  gone  probably,  the  Councils  &  waste  disposal  companies  will  get  their  blooming  act  together  !!

It  appears  that  the  waste  disposal  companies  needs  are    different  w r t  the  types  of  plastic,  especially  the  thin  filmy  stuff,  that  they  can  use.

    Our, Cheshire  East,  council,  allows  food  waste  to  be  disposed  of  ONLY  in  Black  Bins  along  with  non-recycleable  plastics  etc,  Green  bins  for  garden  waste   only,  but  not  thick  wood  or  soil !.  Heavy  prunings  etc  you  take  to  the  tip  yourself { but  not  in  a  trailer  with  a  Company  logo  --  THAT  COSTS  !  }

Collection  hereabouts  on  Thursday  so  Wednesday  lots  of  folk  are  seen  standing  by  the  various  bins  scratching  heads  and  looking  more  than  a  little  confused  but  they  are  just  the  ones  who  care  frown

If our lot want to start charging, they can have them all back!  (we have 3 but rarely use them).  Already paying almost £3750 including water and sewage, so they are getting plenty for only 2 OAPs!

We have no grass, so only use the bin if we are doing pruning, and prunings we can shred and use as mulch if necessary.  Garden could probably do with some mulch this year.

We can also compost them, like we used to.

We have a separate food waste bin, but never have any food waste as we have an Insinkerator.

Takes us  about 6 weeks to fully fill our regular bin, which is fairly large, about 4 weeks for the half size recycling bins.  Then we are away for about 3 months when they have nothing to collect from our house.

No way will we be paying more!

Miserable day rain on and off all day, frown not been up to much, wet walk with the dog and then work.

So far our council don't charge for refuse bins or  collections, but they do now charge for taking non household waste at the local tip.

Pleased to hear you got through the weather and reached home ok Francis.  Sounds like a nice break in the Lakes. smile

I have just said goodbye to our pancake eaters, so much for a quiet day in the kitchen. I did have a good helper with my 8 year old grandson, but I think his motives for staying in the kitchen were slightly skewed. wink

Tammy, our council charge if you want a second bin and as we need one we have to pay £25 p.a. They then send a bar code and address form that we attach to the bin, these are also sent out to those with just one bin, so that the emptiers can see that the second bin has been paid for. Should be receiving our new forms any time soon.

Why do they want to light up the Tay? - good question, they seem to think it will encourage touristsundecided

Thanks for explanation of how the bins work OH thinks its something similar they are trying to bring in here.

Actually, Helen, the traffic going around clockwise, past Oldham and Hyde etc was so light especially when compared with going anti clockwise, even though it was about 5 miles further. So next time we have a visit we'll probably take the longer route.

Sad though seeing the Snooker club where I spent many a Friday night after work has finally closed down.cry

Kj, we have had similar thoughts as you about returning the bins, but they say you have to keep 1 garden bin per house hold for waste food, if food is found in any other bin they will not empty it. The recycle bin is emptied once a fortnight as is the non recycle bin and garden bin.

Crazy thing is you can still take your garden waste to the skip at no charge as long as its in a private vehicle, if you intend to use a van or trailer you have to obtain a permit from the council to say its not a business, fair enough.

We can easily fill 2 bins (as we did the other day) in just a tidy up of the garden, we do have a shredder so could make mulch or compost just stopped doing that since we've been away for half the year.

Last year we paid a chap to do the hedges (2 x 10ft leylandii) due to OH having a bad shoulder. It was great all done and dusted while we were away in France, came back to lovely neat hedges, takes OH days to do them all and at least 2 trips to the skip with a trailer. We will be using him again this year.

Interesting to hear what other councils are doing to raise money.

At least they cannot say that here, as we have separate little food waste recycling bins.

Like you we have fortnightly  collections, one week the recycling, the next week the general waste and the garden bin.

We too have a fellow we pay to do tree and shrub pruning and also to keep the weeds at bay while we are away.  He has an industrial shredder and then fills our bins, but we could just as easily compost the shreddings or use them for mulch, we have plenty of bare ground round the plants  to cover.

We also have our own little shredder.

Any thick branches I keep and leave to dry, then use them to make things.  Our gardener knows I make things so he often brings me chunks of timber from interesting trees he has cut down.

We also use him for the grounds at the Guide Hall here, so over the years we have struck up a good friendship.

Re waste collections. The other day the idea was being put forward that we should pay a deposit on plastic bottles which we get back when we return them to the supermarket. Those that have travelled in France and Germany will be familiar with this system. I think I would prefer them to put a 5p tax on every container and that money go towards supporting local refuse collections. I might stop all the hair brained ideas some councils have about stopping these essential services?

That would not do much to stop antisocial people just throwing them away, but the thought of getting your money back might.

We have had that sort of system in Norway for many years, but the deposits are much larger now 15p on a small bottle or tin, 25p on a large bottle, it soon mounts up.

We have our electric oven and two hobs so it doubles up as an extra kitchen. There's plenty of room for a coffee table and chairs plus relaxers. We can put the picnic table in there and have a dining area, plus two extra bedrooms in the side annexes. So you can do much more in an awning than you could do in a conservatory!

At least those of us with a conservatory don't have to take it down every 21 days, re erect for 2 days, take it down to re erect again for 21 days. We don't have to worry when it's windy, and it is nice and cosy even when it's cold and icy outside. If it's a large one we can have a dining table, plus a two seater and two chair cane furniture in it. So I think you are very much mistaken in your comment.

It gets nice and warm in the awning, cariadon when the sun comes through the front window even in the winter. If there's no sun, we use an awning heater when it's cold.

Yes I agree it's extra work dismantling and re-erecting it every 21 days but we think it's worth it because of the huge cost saving.

I can here engines running outside as folk defrost there cars. Very glad there is normally no need to do that anymore. Sunny but a fair bit of cloud and still minus 1. I believe it is supposed to get very wet and windy later. A Valentine's Day washout.☹️

It's fine while your wife has her health and strength to do it, but what if she can no longer do it, we women are not as strong as you men and there are things we shouldn't do as our bodies are not designed for it, and it's not a sexist remarks, as I made the mistake when younger that I could lift and carry things and am paying for it now. Will you be able to do it on your own, or if your health went, long term not temporary what would you do then.

There are a lot of good v bad points for an awning, but we caravanners that holiday in our vans have an option to use one or not,

We were out walking last week and there was plastic bottles chucked away carelessly and blowing around in the wind. If plastic bottles are discontinued in favour of glass, will the inconsiderate still throw the glass bottle away, if so will the countryside be littered with broken glass.

Remember as a child we used to be able to return bottles for a refund, we used to go looking for bottles to get some pocket money.

We'll just have to hope for the best regarding health. Having said that, we've seen people with disabilities getting help from others in putting up their awning. So that's always a possibility. When I had a fractured wrist last year, others on the site offered to help with the awning.
