Moselle Tour

Planning on visiting Moselle river valley mid August to mid September. Looking for site recommendations along the river so we can stay a few days then move on. Not sure how busy it will be, when do German schools go back? Reason for having to go in August is with home commitments need to be back mid September.

At moment plan is to cross to Rotterdam or Zeebrugge travel to south of Koblenz (about 200 miles so comfortable 5 hours I think). Then work our way along the river coming back through Luxembourg.

Grateful to receive any suggestions or tips.

Plenty of sites and Stellplatz along the Moselle and I would have thought you should be able to find space along there somewhere at any time of year. Have a look at my blog here to see where I stayed.

My favorite place to tour, nearly every village and Town on the Mosel (German spelling) has a stellplatz. We start in Koblenz drive down the river too Trier a distance of about 60 miles which will take up to three weeks to complete, a lot of the Stellplatz are situated in vineyards so be ready for a tasting or two and on some sites if you buy their wine tehe night is free. We used the Reise Mobil Stellplatz guide which is quite expensive but worth the cost if you are staying for a week or two or returning to Germany again it also has places to stay from other countries. There really are some nice places to stay by the side of the river and watch the passing boats/barges, dont forget to try the Silvaner wine a nice crisp summer white wine which is best when young.

Enjoy we have planned to return next year.

Campingplatz Im Grünen in Trittenheim is an excellent venue with everything you will need in the local village. Friendly owner and a local bus service in the village that will take you (and your bike) further afield. Children in some German states won't be going back to school until mid September so it may be advisable to book ahead or arrive early.

We stay in Zell as you can park on a site or for free and you can walk across the foot bridge to Zell centre with great wine houses

This site is very nice and we have booked again in September

Like other MHers we too stayed exclusively on Stellplatze when we travelled along the Moselle.  We did it the opposite way though, and started off in Trier (has Stellplatz and campsite within walking distance of town).  Then stayed at Mehring, after that at Wintrich, which is more like a campsite in layout than a Stellplatz.  Then onto Graach, which is within walking distance of Bernkastel and after that to Neef.  Last Stellplatz was at Ernst, which is very close, cycling distance anyway, to Cochem.

We thoroughly enjoyed that trip, if you have bikes, take them, as apart from the Mosel Radweg, there are other cycle-routes off it, all signposted, so great for various trip by bike.

Can't help with school holidays etc, but you're sure to find a pitch if you don't leave it too late in the day.

Camping Erden is a very good site, stayed in 2017 and going back this year, our German friends book us a riverside pitch. Few mins. walk into the village and then nice walks through the grapevines, good small bar with nice meals, Good owners and the site is clean; for us it was dog friendly, the local wine and wheat beer is very good. On the Mosel cycle route which allowed us to use our cycles for some good rides and also take the dog along with us. We stayed in June and will be the same this year. Used the ACSI card, a 19euro pitch fee and then paid the 3euro supplement for the riverside pitch.

Our favourite site on the Mosel is Camping Burgen (at Burgen, between Cochem and Koblenz.  We have stayed at this site, on and off for 30 years.  Toilet blocks are immaculate.  Camping Burgen is now owned by a different family, the former owner having retired, but the standards have been maintained.  Years ago this always used to be our last stop of our summer european jaunt, before the long journey back to Calais.  One of our favourite places to stay - right by the side of the river, just opposite Burg Bischofstein which is lit up at night.

The site is within easy reach of Cochem, Koblenz, Burg Thurant, Burg Pyrmont and the fairy tale Burg Eltz.

We've done the Moselle a few times from both directions lots of nice sites all along the river. One of our favourite towns is just a little SW of Trier called Saarburg, very pretty. There are a few Acsi sites there and a good stellplatz.

....just spotted you are doing mid-August to September.  The Cochem weinfest is usually the last (complete) weekend in August and is worth a visit.  It finishes with an excellent firework display on the Sunday evening.  We used to stay for the fireworks on the Sunday as the end of our holiday and make our way back to Calais on the Monday...

Thanks for all replies  Moselle looks a good choice for 3 week tour plenty of places to stop Don't like to book to maintain flexability  but seems to be plenty of choices of camp sites and Stellplatz   Not done Aire or Stellplatz before but been given  Reis  Mobil Stellplatz 2015. Any  more Stellplatz recommendation particularly vineyards gratefully received together with advice on Stellplatz usage.

We have stayed at Zell a couple of times and highly recommend.  Walk into town, lots of pubs, shops etc. Boat trips galore.  You can park just outside the main camp, but there is a charge.  I believe you can use the site facilities,  it is a popular site so you may have to book in August.  The Globus store on the estate on hill behind the campsite is worth a visit, cheap fuel as well.

As DSB has mentioned, Cochem and other towns have their annual wine festivals around the end of august into September. Any campsites near to these towns will be full up, and the nearby parking places may taken by 'travellers'. A bit of research and site booking might be prudent.

A bit of pedantry: it's the Mosel not the Moselle when it's in Germany!

A few weeks to departure. Booked  3 nights by email at Camping Burgen and then plan to move down the Mosel. Not used Stellplatz before (got the 2015 Bord Atlas but its in German of course.) How do they work do you just turn up? Do you check in with anybody or wait for someone to collect money? Is electric hook up available? Any hints and tips gratefully received.

Hope you enjoy Camping Burgen.  Plenty to see in the area.  We visited last in 2016.  Seemed nice folk who have taken over the site from Dieter Linzenbach, who I understand still lives in the village.  Do let us know how you get on.

    Have a great time.

Thanks All for advice and information.

Got back from Mosel a couple of weeks ago. Didn't use stelplatz in end stayed on sites. As people have said its ideal area for motorhomers. Didn't book any sites other than first one but plenty of space there.

We started at Burgen then just did short hops between sites.

Camping Zell Mosel at Zell easy walk into Town.

Mosel Camping at Traben- Trarbach walking distance to town.

    Campingplatz Erden

    Camping Schenk Bernkastel Kues

Campingpark Treveris at Trier very close to city

Then back through Luxembourg stayed at Camping Im Aal

    Esch-sur-Sure lovely village

Mosel brilliant place to tour and I would say nicer than Rhine.

Only problem we had was acceptance of credit cards but aware this would be issue so took extra cash.

Have put reviews for most sites on ACSI

    Thanks again

Thanks for the feedback, it's always interesting to read of someone's experiences after asking for advice/hints/tips etc.  The Mosel is a nice area, it's a while since we went, we found the Stellplatze very good, and didn't stay on any sites there.  Really enjoyed the cycling there too, perhaps it's time to think of re-visiting soon wink
