Looking for suggestions for sites in Devon/Dorset/Hampshire region in August suited to a family with a 6 and 2 year old. Ideally near some suitable attractions/days out.

Thanks in advance

Paul

That's a big area. What would you like to find on the site itself, do you want a big site with lots of facilities or somewhere smaller, a CL maybe or a non facility site?

You don't say wether you want sea side in close proximity or not, and for how long. Not one of the above counties, but not a million miles away, is Longleat CAMC site in Wiltshire. Certainly great for four days / a week, as part of a two week holiday. Passes to Longleat Park are reasonable if bought in advance through the CC link. Plenty to keep children of the ages mentioned amused, even if the weather is not kind, as can be the case in our summer.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry I was a bit vague. As far as site facilities would prefer a shower block as it’s easier to sort the kids out, not to fussed about anything else really as long as there is room for them to play. Would be nice if there was a nice pub within walking distance but not essential. Mainly needs to have plenty to do in the area within say a hours drive.

Not a CC site, but we stayed at Galmpton Touring Park near Brixham, Devon last year.  There is loads to do in the area, there were lots of families and the kids seemed to be enjoying the play area which is in are larger grass section slightly away from the vans, but within sight.  The views from the site down the Dart estuary are lovely.  There is a good sized if older style toilet/shower block.  Walking distance to the village pub and local shop/bakery.  The site had a really relaxed and friendly vibe, and was well managed.

We are looking to book for a fortnight and ideally would like to have a decent beach within an hours drive or so. We went to longleat last year and loved it, as you say it was great for the kids and there was plenty to do around and about.

There are four top quality sites at Tavistock in Devon - all reviewed on UKCampsite - and one of them with an indoor pool. Take your pick !  It's arguably one of the two most attractive market towns in Devon, with immediate access to little walks on Dartmoor for the children, all the indoor and outdoor attractions in Plymouth an easy drive away, and the beaches of both the north and south coast within the hour's drive which you mention.

What about the Club's Minehead Site? Close to beach, walk into a nice town, lots of places of interest such as Exmoor, NT properties, on your doorstep? If you can't get in there, look at Burrowhayes Farm, has pony trekking adjacent, not far from Minehead.

Edit: I'd certainly echo Eurotravellers advice, Tavistock is great. Edge of Dartmoor, lots to see and do, Rivers for swimming as well as beaches not far away.

Hillhead CAMC is a great site one of our favourites. It is a great site for families as there is a swimming pool, bar and restaurant and in the summer there is entertainment on. The site is close to Brixham and there is plenty to do in the area such as the sea life centre in Torquay and Paignton zoo within easy reach of the site. Hope this helps

How about Wood Farm AS at Charmouth? It has a pool and a cafe and is only a short drive from the beaches of the Jurassic Coast, the Sidmouth Donkey Sanctuary and all that West Dorset and East Devon have to offer.

In Hampshire I think I'd look at New Forest sites, both club and non club. Dorset maybe somewhere like Highlands End or Freshwater Beach,  either side of Bridport. Devon I'd go with the previous Hillhead recommendation or somewhere like the North Morte Farm site at Mortehoe near Woolacombe or similar ones nearby. Woolacombe has a lovely big beach and there's plenty to do round there for easy days out, it will be very busy over there in August but it's popular with families. smile

    Hello padmiester,

As Francis mentioned Hillhead Club Site is really popular with families and it's very close to the beach.

Also, have a look at our Tourer Explorer sites as these have fun activities for families including giant games and treasure hunts. cool

I quite like the area around Wareham.  If you go West you can trip out to Lulworth Cove, Weymouth and Portland.  Trip to the East takes on Poole and Dorset.  South from Wareham is Studland and Swanage.  If you are looking for sites then there is Hunters Moon CAMC site, but if you want full serviced pitches try Wareham Forest Holidays Site, just up the road from Hunters Moon.
