Overseas Breakdown and Recovery

We are entitled to the "free" Nationwide as well but when I have looked into it they want to charge us £250 for our medical conditions. On top of that we would have to pay for an extension to cover longer than 31 days as you mention. On top of that we would need breakdown and recovery so as you can see Red Pennant actually works out at quite a reasonable cost for us. Unfortunately we don't have the luxury of shopping around as we get clobbered for having some everyday medical conditions.

I agree with your comment “I am yet to find” - this has also been my experience. Red Pennant is not cheap, my “multi trip 31day” renewal for an 8.56 meter motorhome is a smidgen over £500 - that’s a lot of money which ever way you look at it. However with both of us having a few ailments I am yet to find an alternative policy provider that is any cheaper for the equivalent cover.
Every time I utter the words “I am not paying that” at renewal date, St Marion reminds me of the times over the last thirty plus years that we have needed to claim. On one occasion I was in extremis medically - it’s not possible to put a price on the help and support offered and given by Red Pennant - at one point it looked like air ambulance home but that wasn’t a problem to RP. Fortunately it didn’t come to that, which is just as well as our difficult black Labrador would probably have taken multiple lumps out of the RP guy repatriating the outfit. A lot of years ago when tugging, my 2 week old Toyota faulted not far from Paris. Parts we not available in France at that time it being a new model. RP had a Nissan Terrano out to me within three days and we continued our holiday. The Toyota was taken to the UK on the back of the delivery transporter. I don’t think the ethos and functionality of RP has changed much in more recent years if friends and acquaintances are to be believed.
I do think you get what you pay for where insurance is concerned. Also it is so important to have joined up insurance for foreign touring - that is medical, accident, breakdown/repatriation and holiday continuation all under one policy. I had a friend that hadn’t and though the individual policies were all with reputable insurers there was no communication between the companies when things went badly wrong in southern France. To say they were left high and dry in hospital without any support and no knowledge where the biggest bits of the accident had been cleared up to would be understating the facts. The friend says never again.

Way to Go
Not that it will persuade you but Rowena did post this on another thread, I don't know if you saw it?
The other exciting news is that our Motoring and Personal PLUS Policy now offers cover for flight, coach and train holidays within Europe, which again we hope will meet member’s needs if they are planning different types of holidays within the year. For our members that only plan holidays where their vehicle is the primary means of travel the Standard cover is still available.
The only problem is that it only applies to the PLUS policy which is at least 50% more than standard.
On another subject you mention the C&CC. I have contributed to many caravan/motorhome forums over the years and whilst Red Pennant is frequently mentioned mostly good from those that have had to us it, you rarely see any mention of the C&CC insurance good or bad. Whether this is down to a different demographic in terms of posting on forums I don't know but it would be interesting to have some feedback.

Understand where you're coming from, but my car is under 2 years old, has a 7 year warranty and I have total confidence in it. Should anything happen to the car when away from site, the cover will provide garage and replacement vehicle whilst car is being repaired.
If the repairs take longer than my intended stay, well it just means we have a longer holiday.
Life experiences have taught me never to trust any insurance company because they will all try and 'wriggle' out of settlement and are notorious for letting their customers down. If they pay up, then for me, it's a bonus.
That is my sole reason for not paying for over-priced cover and the savings made over the years now amount to thousands, which, if I ever needed to, would more than cover any expense incurred getting my vehicles back home. C'est la Vie
