Holiday ideas?
Hi, i'm looking for ideas on where to go for a holiday this year (UK), for just one week, i live in the Lake District and i wanted to go to Cornwall (st ives) but felt its a long way to drive (450+ miles one way) for just 6 nights as you lose time driving, I like being near the sea but also have to be near a town or city. What do people think, is that too short a time or is that what others do regulary?

We live a tad further south than you in Lancashire but I wouldn't drive or, more especially tow, that far for six nights.

If you like driving the journey is doable --- But ---Why not stay more local and have your 6 nights in southern Scotland. There are many choices to fit your requirements. a few examples are The Edinburgh site in Edinburgh ; Yellowcraigs just outside Edinburgh, also the Ayr site within the town of Ayr.

Why not drive down to junction 25 at Taunton or even further on to Exeter on the M5 and save the two or three hours journey to West Cornwall by visiting East Devon or West Dorset, lots of nice coastal sites. Or go over the Tamar and try North Cornwall, east or west.

We are the opposite to Huskydog and don't think the holiday starts until we arrive and certainly wouldn't drive that far for a week.
What about Whitby? One of my favourite places with the sea and the moors. If you wanted a bigger town there is Scarborough.

As we would be using at least £150 worth of fuel I would not consider it for just 6 days, even if I felt up to towing that distance in a day. Obviously you may feel differently about the distance, but there is still the fuel cost. The suggestion of Scarborough (160 miles or so) is a good one. A nice site on the outskirts, with easy bus access into the town. Plus plenty of places to visit in the vicinity.

Depends really what you are after. Sometimes it isn't the distance, but the type of roads to get somewhere, and you may have to drive on some local roads before you hit the main motorways. Six days is do-able, but you will only have four days to enjoy Cornwall. It's two hours towing from Okehampton to St Ives alone, and that's without any serious traffic.
I would consider North Devon/ Somerset coast, Exmoor area, which will give you a taste of the SW, and save further South to have a longer, more relaxed holiday.
Mid Wales is very nice as well, beautiful scenery, lovely beaches.

If you want to go South and want the coast, what about Dorset? It's still a bit of a hike, but not as far as St Ives. Plenty places to visit if you stopped near to Wareham. (Possibly stay at Hunters Moon CAMC site or Wareham Forest Holiday Park). Visit beaches on Studland peninsular/ Swanage. Just an idea!

The Leyn Peninsular and the Welsh coast including Pembrokeshire are all lovely and an easy drive for six days. Not sure if the towns would be right for you though...
