First time Winter Rally at Majal Spain

Hello,

We are attending our first ever winter rally in Spain (Marjal), leaving mid Feb 2018.  We are retirees.

We have several questions and would be very grateful for any advice, so thank you in advance.

1.  Ferry Portsmouth - Bilbao arriving early am.  Can anyone give us route suggestions and overnight stops enroute (we are towing a Bailey Cartagena)?  How likely is it that the crossing will be diverted due to bad weather in mid feb?

2. Caravan fridge freezer on ferry.  I know that the gas must be switched off.  Can anyone tell me if the fridge and freezer will stay cold during the crossing?  I want to leave some things in the fridge including, importantly, my husbands insulin.  Also I'd like to have food in the freezer.

3. Has anyone stayed at Marjal Costa Blanca Eco Camping Resort?  Any tips or advice / warnings?  What does the laundry cost?  What's the wi-fi and TV to the pitch like?  I've read the site sells pitch sized ground sheets to keep the dust down, is that still so and how much do they cost? Electricity costs - does any one have an idea how much over the allowance we will use at this time of year?  Are pup tents allowed?

4. Any suggestions for places to visit in the area? Also restaurants etc?

5.  This is exciting but also a little scary as we havent been abroad for 4 years as my husband has been proper poorly - he's OK now!  We were advised on a  previous post to attend a rally so we would have support if needed.

Thank you all.

I can't answer your other questions, but in relation to the fridge I would put the caravan on hook-up before setting off, getting the fridge as cold as possible, then put in what you want in there, and fill every available space with things like small boxes of orange juice which you've frozen previously.  When these defrost you can continue to use them.  That should keep the fridge cold enough - providing you don't open the fridge door until you're either on gas, or on hook-up.  Wrap the insulin in bubble wrap so it doesn't get too cold, but stays at a low enough temperature to preserve it. If you need any whilst on board take a cool bag with ice blocks to keep it at the correct temperature because you won't be able to access the caravan fridge whilst on board.

If you speak to Brittany Ferries they sometimes let you hook up, but check what supply they have ie voltage.

    Hi

We've overwintered at Marjal for the last six years so I can supply some info.

Can't help with stop offs on route as we have a motorhome and travel from Santander straight down just having rest breaks.

Site. Groundsheets available in site supermarket, costs 70 euros for a full pitch. Wifi is 25 euros a month, you have a personal router installed in your van and can log in 5 devices, it's very fast at around 35 meg today. Laundry is currently 3.50 with your own liquid or 4 euros without. You have 4kw of power per day in your pitch fee and it's 35 cents per kw after. It's wise to get a Spanish gas bottle and run everything off gas as it works out far cheaper at 14.50 for a 13kg exchange. There's a good secondhand shop in Catral (nearest town) that does them for 10 euros.

Please ask for any other info

    Cheers

Re fridge, we did that crossing a couple of months ago. We had to leave home two days before the crossing and I had filled about five plastic litre milk bottles with water and frozen them in my domestic fridge. I turned the caravan fridge to its lowest setting and filled the freezer with all ready frozen home cooked meals. The bottles of water I put in the veg container in the bottom, Three days after we arrived in Spain i.e. six days after putting the frozen water in the fridge there were still huge chunks of ice in them so that I could not completely empty them.

    Hi again

Today the rally area which is at the back of the site with it's own clubhouse was around two thirds full. They have quite a decent programme to keep you busy.

Marjal is a very large site (1200 pitches) has 5 large toilet blocks and is very well run.

Reception staff are all friendly as are the guys on security. The main gates are locked at midnight and security patrol the site on golf buggies regularly through the night.

You can put anything you like on your pitch as long as it is related to camping ie, tents, windbreaks etc. No washing lines are allowed but you can rent a fold up thing from reception.

RE power use, We have a large American RV and currently average 3 kw per day so no extra bill, we run everything on gas and average a 13kw repsol bottle every 14 days.

    Cheers

The Portsmouth/Bilbao ferry doesn't get re-routed in bad weather, it just gets cancelled but it has to be pretty bad. Just make sure you have seasick remedies if you aren't a good sailor. My OH had 'mal-de-mer' last week crossing 'the bay' and that was on Queen Victoria!

I was there last year for 4 weeks and found just running everything but the heating on EHU, I used 5Kwh a day and got through 11Kgms of gas for heating water and the van. One tip Jolly Kernow has not given you is take a bike, useful for getting about on a very large site and nipping into Catral. The Club house is full of useful information about the area and most regulars on the rally who know the ropes are friendly and helpful. Enjoy.

As for a route, first day head for Zaragosa, a trip of about 200miles and night stop at the Municipal site there, Next day take the toll free A23 to Valencia picking up the toll free A7 to Alcoy, Elche and Catral. The second day is a long run of about 320 miles but its on good fast roads.

we used the sister site at Guadahar this spring and visited the Costa Brava site as part of a day trip....i must say, we thought it was a bit isolated and 'in the middle of nowhere' compared to being on the coast (which we prefer) but the folk we spoke to there loved it and returned regularly, as did those at Guadahar....

the sites themselves are top notch, clean tidy, first class amenities...enjoysmile

Peedee, thank you for the helpful info.  Yes we intend to take one folding bike and hope we can pick up a cheap second hand one when there.

Cyberyacht, thank you for the info.  I suppose I meant if the ferry is cancelled we may have to take another route, St Malo maybe.  Yes sea sick pills are at the ready!  I am not a good sailor!  I'm guessing there is no need to book on the Municipal site in Zaragosa?  I was hoping to do perhaps 250 - 280 miles the first day, given that we get to Bilbao early morning.

Sticking with a short journey on the first day might be wise because it allows for any ferry delays. There is no need to book the Zaragosa site, just turn up. This is about the only site between Bilbao and Valencia on this route, think I paid about 24 euros for the night last time I stopped there. You could go via Burgos, Madrid, and Albecete. Its about the same distance and there are at least a couple of sites open all year, one about 40 miles north of Madrid, and one just south of Madrid. The names escape me at the moment but I am sure someone will come along an elaborate.

    Hi

Yes bikes are a sound idea. The site is surrounded by arable farmland and there are miles of tracks to cycle on off road. Used bikes are always available at the second hand shop I mentioned before, Marisol the owner is very helpful and can "get hold of anything".

The weather for northern Spain in February can be dodgy with plenty of snow. I use www.meteoalarm.eu and www.aemet.com then when further south www.costablancaweather.com all pretty accurate.

Hope you enjoy Marjal as much as we do.

    Cheers

Just checked my notes, the one north of Madrid is at La Cabrera and is called Camping Pico de la Miel. Camping International at Aranjuez is the one about 30 miles south of Madrid

    Hi Peedee

We sometimes stop off at Aranjuez if the traffics been bad. In November it's almost empty. Wifi is best on pitches just behind reception. They do a lovely roast chicken dinner in the restaurant.

I can usually get from there to Alicante in around three and a half hours

    Cheers

    Peedee,

I was interested that your first choice to Marjal was via Zaragosa rather than Madrid? .... is that to avoid the mountains? (My interest is because we may return that way from Almeria rather than via Granada/Madrid to Bilbao).

Using the Madrid route south from Burgos, I would also recommend the campsite at Riaza, just before the Somosierra Pass. Easy access from the A1, a bit shorter distance from Bilbao, and a very interesting town/village.

    JollyKernow,

Interested in your figures for Marjal.  Can you give an idea for the rate if staying for more than 30 days? (pitch + 2 adults).  At Castillo-de-Banos we are paying EU 8.50/night plus metered elec at 30cents/kWh.  As you suggest, we mainly use gas laughing

VM I haven't been via Madrid since 2007, I just prefer via Zaragosa.
