Saw our first Daffodils in flower, which seems very early for up here in N.Yorkshire.

None near where we are NTH! Whereabouts are you? I love to see the first daffodils, and often this is on our way to Abersoch early in the New Year. Has anyone done the Daffodil walk at Farndale - spectacular, but much later in the Spring - or the walk amongst the wild daffodils at Llanystumdwy?? We call that one the Lloyd George Walk and generally do it once a year when we're staying at Abersoch.
I also love to see the first lambs of the New Year - the new thing about lambs being born at the end of 'the old year' (is this for maximum growth) doesn't count - just isn't the same!

ValDa, they were miniature ones in a planter at Ingleton.
Today we spotted at least 3 Herons as we were walking along by the River Wharfe just outside Ilkley, and then a Kingfisher flew passed upstream. They seem to be quite a lot of them about this year.

Great photos, Oneputt. Crossbills certainly love water.
Reports of hawfinch showing well at Whalley, so might have a stroll over there in the morning. Will be taking the bus pass in case the weather becomes a bit too "challenging" to walk back home!

Thanks Pliers seems to be lots of Hawfinches around the country this year. We saw 4 at Lynford Arboretum a couple of weeks ago. Hope you get to see some.
Good day yesterday went to Wareham Greens which is about 2 miles south of Wells next Sea. As I drove into the track a badger scuttled across in front of me. Parked the car and started to walk and within half a mile saw buzzard, kestrel, red kite, hen harrier, approx 75 to 100 Field Fare/redwings and a short eared owl. Never been down this track before and only went cos I read it’s a roosting area for Raptors. On Friday there were 4 Hen Harriers reported, in previous years there have been up to 10.

Today looked like it was going to be a bit dismal, as I would have to stay home waiting for a delivery.
Spent the morning knocking up a bird table to attract species that don't use hanging feeders. Then cleaned all the hanging feeders and refilled.
This afternoon I got my reward, the first bird on the table was a robin who then spent 30 minutes or so chasing away anything that came near. Once he had given in, the stream of birds was fairly constant. Coal tit was next to try out the table and to date they were the only taker. However the feeders and ground feed I put around brought me Goldfinch, Greenfinch,Bluetit, Great tit,Thrush, Blackbird, Wren, Dunnock, Wood Pigeon and Collared Dove, Crows, Magpies Sparrows by the dozen and to top it off, we now have about twenty Redwings just turned up and sat in our trees.
What a great day for a delivery.

We will be heading over that way come the spring/early summer, so will keep this in mind. Just checked Wareham Greens on google which seems to suggest that the Hen Harriers are mainly in winter, is this correct?
Are you still thinking of visiting Gwash Farm next year?

Wareham Green does tend to be best as a wintering roost, BM. Good in the last hour of daylight.
Had a nice walk from Blakeney to Cley, seeing a lovely Barn Owl a couple of Marsh Harriers and plenty of Brent Geese.
Edit - BM if you happen to be anywhere near the Wirral then you'll see overwintering Hen Harriers on the River Dee. Best area is from Burton (near the Harp pub) to Parkgate, best when there's a good tide. Also great chance of seeing Short Eared Owls.

According to a Norfolk bird site, January at Warham appears to be best WN. Unfortunately the Wirrel is a fair way off from Avon.
Might have to get the cover off the van, or maybe a hotel break.

The feeder we put up outside the van here at Ilkley has been visited by the usual Great, Blue and Coal Tits, plus a few Long Tailed Tits, Gold Finches, a Nuthatch, and both a Robin and a male Blackbird landed on the feeder to sample the goodies. The bits that had fallen out were swept up by Pheasants, Dunnocks, Wood Pigeons and any number of other Blackbirds.

Spotted numerous Red Kites as we drove over from Ilkley to York today.

There's a release point at Harewood House and they've obviously spread from there. The last one we spotted was quite close to the A1 between Knaresborough & York.

They seem to be steadily moving south down the A34. I've seen them well down towards Winchester from Newbury where they are quite prolific.

We see them regularly at Barleywood but then there are 5 that roost around Holkham Hall. We see the occasional Black Kite which I suspect is stray from the continent.

Are there any feeding station over your way, similar to Gigrin? Pic looks like the bird has something in the claw and about to feed.
They are still pretty rare in our area at the moment

If anyone is interested or in the area, there has been a reported sighting of 3 great bustards on the isle of portland in dorset.

If you buy a ticket, I could ask them to hang around a bit.
They must have had a bad cage day on Salisbury Plain. There have been a number of escapees sighted. The nearest to you was about 6 weeks ago around the midlands area.
