Getting into York from Beechwood Grange
Hi we're staying at Beechwood Grange club site which is in York next month. We will be in our Motorhome and wont want to drive off site. How can we get onto York from the site? Is there public transport from the site or is York walkable.
Thanks

Personally I would not try to cross over the roads to try and walk into York , extremely fast and busy. A taxi should not cost that much , plus in the information hut there is a book where you can note you want to go into York and others do the same and you can there share the taxi cost if that makes sense. I am presuming you do not have a pooch as you cant walk them off site because of the horse stud.

Isn’t there a park and ride close to Beechwood?
Google will probably have the answer, FB.

fatbelly ,
Adjoining the club site is a racehorse stud , so you cant walk past the stud with a dog or even carrying a dog because of the horses , so your dog would have to be walked in the dog walk which is large, or you have to go out in the van. other than the dog walk there is absolutely no other place you can walk your dog.

Take another look at the site details page, FB.
Edit: For the life is me I cannot see the dog restriction stated on the site page or in the site leaflet. It should be given prominence!

I've rang the site & they confirm you cannot walk your dog along the access lane. It does not state this anywhere in the site description.
Been told I can park at Monks Cross P&R but don't know how safe our MH would be there or if they accept MH's.
This could make a mess of our planned holiday in York.

The dog restriction is mentioned in the UK sites app under useful information for Beechwood Grange, but doesn't appear to be on the mobile website, sure it used to be on the full website, as we were aware of it when we went a few years ago.

We are going to be there on the 9th December, planning to walk to Monks Cross the Saturday afternoon for John Lewis then drive to the P&R on Sunday to get into York itself, or if the walk is not too bad we may ask to warder to see if we can leave the van on site while we go as we are off to Bridlington on the Sunday evening.
There are height barriers in the P&R you need to ask the attendant to raise/move so I should think it should be OK and safe to park there and the attendant may be vigilant if anyone tries to steal it, of course someone could break in but hopefully its busy so thieves would be put off and its not really any different to parking anywhere else is it, just set your alarm and hide any valuables etc.

We'e used this site, granted a few years ago. We thought it was great individual bathrooms 😉. Bus literally outside the gate, hardstanding.
If you cannot walk you dog out of the site it ought to be very clearly stated in large letters. It wouldn't ocurr to me that you wouldn't be able just stroll out with your four legged friend. Even more so if it says ideal for dogs.
I'l report the thread to see if this can be rectified in the description 😉

It does mention it on the mobile site but you have to hunt for it , you have to click on book a pitch , then I believe it's then under useful information. I only know of the restriction as I use the site when I visit family plus I will only ever stay no more than two nights as it's so restrictive if you have a Motorhome.

I've used P&Rs elsewhere but not this one. Security at these is generally good with CCTV, 'guards' and barriers in some cases. I'd not worry about it, just wish there were more P&Rs around the country which motorcaravaners could use.
From what I recall about the site, the designated dog walk is totally acceptable and meets those essential requirements so no problems there.

FB, if you can manage without a toilet block there's a good 18 van commercial site, all H/S, where the bus stop into York is about 1/4 ml down the road. Here's the link.

Couldn't get your link to work Nellie. Is it this one? Camping and Caravan Club?

We have stayed at this site many times and has one of the best dog fields on the club sites, it's all fenced and safe to let your dog off lead. It's three miles from the site to the centre of York, and I use my bike to go into the city because there is a bike lane from Beechwood all the way in. It,s a lovely site and great wardens.

Thanks ET, that's the one. It used to be a CS but it's now just a commercial site, although it may be one of their listed sites.

FB, no matter where you stay, best not take the MH into York unless you know City well, there are narrow gateways into city centre due to city walls. Best P&R is at Askham Bar, now has dedicated MH parking, if you have a bus pass, then ride into York is very cheap on modern clean and tidy bendy buses! Every 10 minutes, drop you off at various popular locations in centre. Takes 10 minutes ride from Askham Bar. Beechwood Grange is at the Eastern end of the city bypass, at possibly the busiest roundabout on the A64, horrendous at rush hour.
Here's a link to P&R : https://www.itravelyork.info/park-and-ride/park-and-ride-sites/askham-bar/

We have used Monks Cross P&R at York many times as we live in Scarborough and go by car to there for York City. Would happily park our van there too ( in the dedicated area) .

Its 5 or 10 mins from Beechwood Grange I would think in a vehicle.

Thanks for all the replies, we cancelled our Beechwood Grange booking & just now 2 nights have become available at Rowntree Park. I've been watching Rowntree Park availability each day & nothing was available. I checked at 11:25 this morning and again nothing was available. Just by chance (don't know what made me do it) I checked gain at 11:27 & 2 nights become available . So in haste I clicked book & got them. The wardens at the site said to me over the phone 3 weeks ago "if you keep on checking you'll probably get a cancellation" and they were right.
Sad we had to cancel Beechwood because it looks a great site with everything we want. If we would be allowed to walk our Dog on & off the site we would not have cancelled.
Anyone got any recommendations for places to eat & drink in York

Loch Fyne Restaurant, right next to River Foss. Very nice, not too pricey. Try some of the really old pubs down Petergate and around the Minster, full of character. We weren't impressed with Betty's, over priced and poor choices for us. But the tourists, mainly Japanese and Chinese love it! If you get a wet day, best Museum in York is National Railway Museum.....and it's free!
Have a lovely time, York is rather special and lovely this time of year. Walk the walls if you get the chance! Jorvik? Up to you, but we found it rather underwhelming and very expensive. The Minster is just stunning, inside and out.
