Austria
Hi There,
We are thinking of going to Austria next summer with the van. Have any of you guys and gals done this and can recommend a site for stopover on the way there and back.
Looks like Belgium, Germany and then into Austria is the shortest route but would not be adverse to going through France.
Looking forward to hearing your recommendations.
Thanks in advance.

Darren, From your Norfolk address do you intend to cross from Harwich to Hook of Holland ?
From there to Vienna is 750 miles - do we assume two stops on the way?

Hi Dan, we visited Austria in 2015 en route to Italy and intended to stay one night but stayed four as we really liked the site. The route we took was over the Fern Pass which we really enjoyed and found an easy tow, but interesting.
One reason for this was to avoid our fellow travellers having to use a GoBox for tolls but with a van I think the costs are quite reasonable.
We stayed at Camping Aktiv at Prutz which is alongside the River Inn which flows on to Innsbruck and the area is very scenic with a great drive up the Kaunertal Glacier.

Thanks Guys - Eurotraveller, we were thinking of using the Channel Tunnel; We do live in Norfolk but will start trip from the outlaws in Surrey.
Was thinking of 1 overnight on the way but 2 would not be an issue.
Allanandjean - will look at the Fern Pass.
Thanks - Darren

Darren, Calais to Vienna is even further - listed as 814 miles. . What time do you aim to leave the tunnel and how far do you want to drive on day one?

Darren whereabouts in Austria are you going .We travelled to Lake Constance through Belgium and Germany and entered Austria at Bregenz and travelled up into the alps to near St Anton had a few nights and then back into Germany near Salzburg. Remember you will need a vignette for the motorways/tunnels although we managed the trip on non motorway roads but were in a motorhome.
I can provide further details if required

Dan, we went Harwich-Hook then two stops en route to Prutz.
Of these only one would fit with your route and that’s Camping Chistopherous near Altenstadt and just off the A7 motorway. Access is easy and the meal in the restaurant was excellent.

Hi DanR, we have been going to Austria for 30 years and the last 14 with the Caravan. Have a look at my website www.joysofeuropeancaravanning.co.uk. We always go through the tunnel and then Belgium, Germany into Austria and never had any problems. If you would like our direct route with stopovers email me on the address on my website and I will send you map and route.
What months are you thinking of going and for how long.?

Darren, Austria is more than 400 miles wide. For the western side I would go out via Strasbourg and for the eastern side via Regensburg. Big paper map unfolded on the kitchen table is useful Safe journey.

If you have never been to Austria you are in for a treat, it is a lovely country to visit. We did a big tour there last year, starting in Salzburg we then travelled down to the Ossiacher See near Villach before heading for Vienna via Graz. From Vienne we worked our way along the Danube Valley via Krems and Grein before heading into Germany briefly and then a final stop in Austria at Imst. We then made our way home through Germany and France. Full details of the trip are contained in this Blog which might give you a few pointers for places to visit and places to stay.
As to how to get to Austria we all seem to have our own ideas. We prefer to head down through France to Chalons and them take the motorway out towards Metz. This more expensive in tolls but in my view far better and quieter roads. Depending of how far you wish to drive in a day I would suggest a minimum of two overnight stops if for example your destination was Innsbruck. Being retired we tend to take a more leisurely approach and wander off route a bit!
If you can give a few more details of where you are heading I can perhaps suggest a few stops en route as we have built up quite a collection of en route campsites over the years.
