Ferry crossing

Hi we would be grateful if any club members have used Brittany ferries  route from Portsmouth to Le Harve with a caravan? We have always used the Barfleur from Poole but now we have a dog we are not happy leaving her on the car deck for four hours so we have booked on to the etretat ferry because it has dog friendly cabins .My only concern is whether it is conventional roll on roll off ferry or do you have to reverse ? Ok on a site when you can see what you are doing ,not so good on a ferry. Don't want to make a complete idiot of myself.Would like to hear if anybody has used the service and if they had any problems.

Many thanks.

Can't remember who ran the Dover-Calais ferries back in 1964, but you had to drive through the car deck, turn & drive back & park ready to drive off. Seem to recall they had a turntable to help when the deck was full & no room to drive round. Also recall coming back to the car & finding the next line was parked so close, the only way into my car was through the window!

I remember the old P&O Leopard back in the eighties where you did a U turn at the end of the car deck. Bit tight!

I used it some years ago and it is a conventional drive on, drive off. No ferries nowadays need you to reverse; I think that would be a step too far for some! My main recollection is that we decided just to have a seat, not a cabin. People were chatting all night and we didn’t sleep a wink. Pulled in at the Autoroute services after an hour or two and slept for hours.

You’ve not used Pentland Ferries to Orkney, obviously, HG.

My apology for referring to a UK ferry in the Overseas section. surprised

I’ve obviously led a sheltered life! I’ve been on the Studland ferry though.

I do remember family camping holidays to Europe where reversing on was quite common, especially if you were one of the last to board (last on, first off). Dont recall seeing any caravans; perhaps they were rare in the fifties.

Certainly much rarer, HG. They would have been a similar vintage to the one in my avatar.

I also remember the old IoW ferries with turntables. Drive on, spin on the turntable and end up facing the right way for disembarkation.
