I thought large bird of prey.  When we were there last time Marsh harriers were pointed out to us and that's what I suspected. We did have 6 large birds of prey soaring at once, parents and offspring? on the thermals, I suspected they were red kites as they mewed.

I think the one could be buzzard having had same feather in our field here in the Lot France, also today we had 9 purple heron's flying around looking for some water to land we have a few small lakes near us and they eventually went off towards one and then disappeared a lovely sight of 9 together.

More photos from a visit to NT Stourhead this morning, some Canada geese and a lovely old sweet chestnut tree. I could smell the burnt sugar scent of the Katsura trees. CL at Stourhead had just one motorhome on it but it's a lovely time of the year to visit and have the freedom of the estate. smile

Lovely photos brue, fond memories of Stourhead when we used to live in Somerset and as you say superb gardens for Autumnal  colours.

As brue says Stourhead is great place to visit & walk round the lake or the woodlands &  wider estate  & the annual ‘Autumn Colours’ event  will soon occur.  This was my attempt at catching the colour in 2014, unfortunately a bit late but an enjoyable walk around the lake.

Good start to our long weekend in North Norfolk.  Highlights so far, Osprey over Holkham Woods.  Water Rail and Kingfisher at Sculthorpe. Curlew, Blackcaps, Linnets and Hobby at Burnham Overy.  Holme produced our first  Yellow Browed Warbler of the season.  Lots of ducks, waders and geese piling in from overseas.

Caravan in for annual service at the moment, so a trip to Chew Valley lake revealed excessive birdlife that I did not realise were present in such numbers.

47 Egrets Little and Great combined

Several Heron, Gulls Hundreds of Cormerants, Black Tailed Godwit, Crows some with grey wings and many many more.

The Lake is not far from the Bath Chew Valley AS site.

As we were driving around to the other side of the Lake, I saw a sign for Chewton Mendip which is where the escaped Great Bustard has been seen, but it was not to be seen, even though it is supposed to be alongside the Chewton Mendip to Litton road.

After a hard day sanding the garage door ready to paint while the van is in for service, took a late afternoon stroll along the Severn Estuary where there had been sightings of a Turtle Dove.

Not hard to find, and the bird was not at all spooked by my presence. It allowed me to sit very close as it fed constantly for about 20 minutes. I would have stayed longer but the wind was bitterly cold and I had left my coat in the car as the parking area was out of the wind. I should know by now.

The dove fed constantly until it suddenly hopped on the branch and sat motionless then looked up to keep an eye on what turned out to be a passing Peregrine.

Thanks Blue, this time I'm travelling alone and where I'm staying is on the South West migration route for cranes.  Thanks for the reminder for the 2018 Osprey photos.

We saw cranes flying over the Aude, a couple of weeks ago - many of them, in formation!  An amazing sight.

Hope you get to see some too, Oneputt.

We also watched about fifty vultures (mixed Griffon, Black, and Lammergier) near the cliffs at Bugarach about ten days ago.  Fifteen minutes after they left the cliffs there was nothing to see, so we were very lucky.

Forgot, we saw a south flying Osprey fishing on one of the rivers on the way back north last Thursday!  We hoped it was one of our 'Glaslyn Ospreys'!!

In our garden we have a Cornus Kousa  tree, Japanese dogwood, this year it is covered in knobbly red fruit. Apparently they are edible so I tried one the other day, it had a light peachy taste. But I will leave the rest for the birds! They like them more than me. Seems like a good year for fruits and berries. We'll be leaving the end of our apples for the birds too. smile

Just come back from a week in Northumberland  and saw hundreds of greylag geese on the move ready for the winter, also a lots of waders but unable to see what as going along in a friends car. Also a lots berries about so could be a good winter for seeing different species feeding on them.

The jays in our plot are busy collecting acorns never seen so many jays about, a sign of a hard winter.
