Onto my 3rd of the Lacey Flint detective series, written by Sharon Bolton. As with any such series the reader must start with the first of the series....Now You See Me. They are just that bit different. I might just continue with the 4th one provided we've got it in the van.

Having seem the two Jack Reacher films I read Night School while on holiday. An excellent gripping read, I couldn't put it down, almost a detective story as the hero and friends find the clues to find (and dispose of) the baddies. Lots of action as well.

Will certainly look out for those.  Seems like my cup of tea, or in my case coffee, as I don't like tea, lol.

Recently read Scoundrel by Bernard Cornwell.  A definite page turner that kept me guessing right to the end.  A very old but well written thriller.   Published 1992 I think.

Presently reading Ian Rankin's Saints of the Shadow Bible [Rebus-detective].  Didn't watch the TV series nor have I read other Rebus based books but am finding this a good read.

N, I found all the Rebus books good reads. You should read the whole series in sequence to appreciate them fully. Have you read any Stuart McBride's Logan McRae books based round Aberdeen, another series to be read sequentially, starting with Cold Granite..

Does anyone listen to radio 4 Book at Bedtime? I caught the tail end of Adrian Mole aged 13 3/4 last night, I had forgotten just how laugh out loud funny it is, all those characters, Bert and his dog, Mr Lucas (fighting with Adrian's father in the front garden) Pandora and Barry Kent....going to catch up on iplayer as it was a new reading and very good.

This was an antidote to another book I'm reading, Travelling to Infinity by Jane Hawking (The Theory of Everything film was based on her memoirs of life with Stephen Hawking) it is a rewrite of a previous book where she let rip about how difficult things were for her and reading this book I can see why.

So Adrian Mole won last night! smilesmile

I rarely listen to book at bedtime and to be honest had forgotten it started this week, I'll catch up on iPlayer. Similarly I have been listening to Fergal Keen reading, lovely voice 😉,  his family life Wounded at 9.45am well worth a listen. Often you can catch omnibus versions on 4extra but at the weekend.

They had a spell of book at bedtime that I didn't consider conducive to a decent sleep and I stopped then and not got back in the habit.

I agree with you there, some of the books have been the stuff of nightmares not peaceful sleep. So the night I decided to listen Adrian Mole is just finishing! wink I've still got the old paperback book so I've lined it up for a re-read if I don't catch up on iplayer.

Whoops apologises 😶. Fergal Keen's reading Wounds not as I stated Wounded! I missed this mornings and went on iPlayer and find that there are 5 episodes available and are download-able. I like the new auto play which allows you to continue to listen without having to select the next episode - a good improvement in my opinion. Sorry this isn't reading books ourselves 😲

I've virtually given up on my kindle, I buy cheap secondhand books from ebay or charity shops, much cheaper for the books I want to read. laughing

Michael Connelly has a new Harry Bosch out this month called Two Kinds of Truth. Have asked library to get hold of one. Meantime am reading The Late Show, featuring a new detective, also by Connelly.

Having enjoyed the Victoria and Abdul film recently I'm also enjoying the book which became the film. Victoria and Abdul by Shrabani Basu, she had access to many historic papers and documents, including the Royal Archives.

Thanks for the heads up on that, those Bosch books are some of my favourites. Will have to order it when I pop into the library tomorrow to pick up the latest Banks and Roy Grace books which are waiting for me! Also got the long awaited return of John le Carre's  George Smiley about to arrive. That job list Mrs M's given me is going to have to be put on hold for a while! wink

I'll be waiting for my copy of the Bosch book coming from our daughter, as she's the one to read them first. Must ask her if she's getting the The Late show too!! We'll wait for the Banks & Grace ones to appear on Kindle, I guess. I've just started the latest (3rd) book of short stories by Jeffrey Deaver, Trouble in Mind.

Our library has been "outsourced". A great bone of contention.

Anyway, we checked with them when we were in today and the new Bosch isn't on their radar yet. It was touted at the back of The Late Show book as coming out in October so may have been delayed or it may be the new "managers" of the library don't have a clue!

Is the Le Carre "The Legacy of Spies" M? Been waiting for that for a while now.

Michael Connolly has a new series starting with The Late Show, with a night shift LAPD Detective, Renee Ballard. Has anyone read it yet?

I haven’t been following this thread so apologies if these books have been mentioned before. Many people will have read Donna Tartt’s “The Goldfinch”, she is such a good writer and this lingers in the memory. Well, both my wife and I read her first novel, The Secret History, another superbly written, great novel. Highly recommended and such an antidote to the dozens of books I read this year which were distinctly average. My definition of a good read? ... you slow down because you don’t want it to end and when it does you go back to the beginning and start to flick through it.
