Baltic trip

Does anyone have experience of motorhoming in the Baltic states?

I'm planning on visiting Poland (possibly), Lithuania, Latvia and Sweden early next summer and would like advice on whether freedom camping is advisable/possible and whether it's better to do the road miles through Poland or miss it out and take the Kiel - Klaipeda ferry.

Any help appreciated!

I don't have any experience, but it was something that I had planned a couple of years ago myself, driving once round the Baltic. It would have meant passing through a bit of Russia around St Petersburg. I discarded that idea after I found out what a hassle it would be to get the necessary permits, so that left the alternative of the Helsinki-Tallinn ferry. Then my wife was so concerned about our safety in the Baltic states. She reckoned that with our relatively new outfit (at the time) we would be a sitting duck for highway robbery which, by accounts, seemed to be a risk at the time, so I offered to look into taking the Helsinki-Travemünde ferry instead, thereby bypassing the Baltic states, but somehow that's as far as my plans got.

Sorry I can't help you more, but failing other replies that are of more use I thought I'd mention what went through my head.

I was hoping to read the replies here, there are some very well travelled CT'ers. Maybe it's as Lutz has intimated?. Not somewhere I'd thought about until you raised the thread.

No personal experience but my brother (full time solo MH) has spent a lot of time in the Baltic states and Poland, always enjoyed the experience and never encountered any problems.  I will ask him for routes, campsites and any other comments

I think Chris Rogers posts on here about interesting Baltic trips, I think he has Latvian relatives. Hope that's right, there might be posts from him in the story section?

Thanks to everyone who replied - the link to magbaztravels.com was very useful, together with other links from that site. An easy way to lose several hours!!! I'm still working through all the info they've thrown up but still open to more suggestions and advice.
