Very Poor site directions on club listings

we are on our way home from south of France having stayed on 3 different CMC listed and recommended sites with another tomorrow. When the CMC appraise the sites do they actually visit them?! The reason I ask is because so far and without exception the directions on the club website are dire and so vague as to be at best misleading and at worst downright dangerous. As advice to anyone do not rely on the directions and make sure you research exactly where the site is and how to access it!

The Club seem to visit sites in the ABS service. I recall Hazel, when she worked for the Club, mentioning it several times when she  was actually in the process of visiting sites. I no longer tend to visit sites in the ABS service. Do you use a sat nav? If so I have always found Archies POI's to be pretty reliable in getting to campsites.

I have Archies POI's downloaded onto my cars hard disc, always accurate to the gate/barrier. But my wife is a very good navigator and loves the paper maps, so of course I listen to her sealed and keep a crafty eye on the satnav  innocent which is never set for destination but good for visual.

Of course we do our homework the night before, so have a good idea beforehand. It's when diversions happen it becomes 'fun'.

As a test of a tricky campsite to find  I just re read the directions here on this website for finding the way to Camping Trologot  at St Pol de Leon near Roscoff in Brittany . Have a look and see what you think - do you ask your navigator to recite that long complex paragraph of instructions to you in detail, very slowly, line by line as you drive, or do you trust your sat nav to take you the direct route straight through the town, even though it might be market day with cars parked along every narrow street?

We've motorhomed in almost every department in France over the years and never found it very difficult to find either Campsites or Aires.

A good map, a sites book , an Aires book, a compass and somebody who can use them solves most of the navigation issues.  Plan your route before commencing and pencil in details on your map.

Never rely completely on an Electronic sat-nav. They are a useful aid but can give misleading directions.  This is even more important for Caravanners who have never learned to reverse their outfit.

I agree about the research and map checks etc, we always do which in part is how we realise how utterly cr8p the club directions are..... Arrived at Maisons-Laffitte earlier today and the directions if followed (at best) take you the wrong way down a one way street..... at worse they are totally misleading.

Not sure where my earlier reply disappeared to 🤔

The gist was that I thought instructions were good enough ..... do folks want to be personally guided to the entrance from the nearest motorway?

Never had a problem with the club directions on the European sites we stayed at.  Generally try to use coordinates on the sat-nav.  Only went wrong once in France when the site had changed their entrance and ended up in an orchard!

PS If staying at Delft Houste and relying on sat nav, put your final destination as Delft Ikea shop, you are 300 yards from the site and it will stop the sat nav taking through the town and under the motorway where priorities have changed.

As I am on my own the sat nav -using co-ordinates- is essential.  I look on maps before setting off and have had few problems.  Not having a navigator is the main reason I changed from a caravan to a motorhome.  Its easier to turn a m/h than a big caravan around.

Oneputt, thanks for the advice on the route to Delftse Hout campsite. We've a 5 night break booked there from next Monday. ( Feyenoord v Man City tickets in hand ).

Regarding the site directions in the Caravan Europe guides, I think most of the entries are submitted by Club members, rather than from the Club itself. But could well be wrong on that.

We've found most of them to be accurate, but certainly not all. Remember going very wrong in Switzerland a few years ago, not what you want after a long day on the road.

Pliers, when you approach Ikea turn left at the roundabout and continue

along the road through the narrows then turn sharp right, site is a 300 yards on the left hand side.

    Have a great timelaughing

Thanks Kimberley, I suggest the club reps need to visit the sites incognito whilst towing a caravan and using the site directions ....... that certainly wasn't done on the Paris site.

Oneputt, thanks for info, absolutely 100% correct.

We're still at Delfste Hout, lovely site, enjoyed last night's match. Hope it might eventually stop raining.  Planning to get the train into Amsterdam tomorrow, then ferry back to Hull, Saturday evening.

    Hello everyone,

We have the campsite directions and the GPS coordinates provided by the campsites during the contracting process. These are reviewed when our inspection teams visit the campsite.

We are in the process of updating the website and brochure entries for the next season. Part of that process will involve us reviewing the directions and ensuring that these are accurate.

    Kind regards,

    Thomas
