Planning for Italy 2018

Having spent the last five years making trips to France, we're looking further afield to Italy and needing some advice.

we live in North-west of U.K. and normally get to France through Portsmouth/Caen but we are open to using other routes.  We have a large twin-axle and are probably going to be taking a 4 week trip leaving at the start of July.  We quite fancy the Italian lakes and would stay on same site for a couple of weeks and spend a week each way getting there and then going home.  We're not overly concerned about tolls if it keeps the travel time down but we are concerned taking our outfit onto unsuitable roads and mountain passes!

I would really welcome some advice.

    No real need to worry about the route if you are heading for the popular lakes as most can be accessed via motorway or Super Strada  roads. You may need to select your site carefully as not all Italian sites have large pitches but there are enough that do. Like with all  things routes need careful planning even if you use a sat nav. Google Earth is quite a useful tool. Best to ask specific question as your planning progresses.

    Lou, With two weeks of travelling time it gives you the chance to decide what you want to see and do on the way - the possibilities include Chamonix Mont Blanc, or Alsace, or a few days in Switzerland, or a look at the amazing Italian Dolomites. I myself would have no difficulty filling that fortnight - it's the other fortnight on one single site by a lake which would begin to bore me before the two weeks was up. But I'm notoriously restless. I hope you have a good time.

    We enjoyed a 4 week tour down to Venice and back this summer spending a week on the Med at the Club 'endorsed' site Ca Savio. We encountered no difficulties on the drive and had stays in Lucerne and Lake Garda on the way down and Innsbruck and Winterthur (Rheinfalls) on the way back as well as a few stop overs.

    We've just returned from Alsace/Lucerne/Lake Como/Lake Maggiore etc. Out via Gotthard Tunnel back via Simplon Pass.  The roads around the lakes are narrowish but negotiable (OH likes the offside mirror folded in on some bits due to previous experience at Lake Garda).  We like L. Maggiore and L.Garda  but were not so keen on the bit we visited of L. Como which was reached via Lugano and many fairly narrow tunnels on the lakeside.  It's a beautiful area, we like Cannobio on Maggiore but have also travelled around a bit seeing other places round the lake.  Its worth downloading the ferry timetable before you go as it takes a bit of working out and might affect where you stay, depending on what you want to see.  The toll for Swiss motorways (valid for year) was, I think, 40E. We travelled via Eurotunnel

    We stayed at:  

    Camping Pierre de Coubetin - Ribeauville,  Camping International Lido - lac Luzern,  Magic Lake – Dongo- Lake Como,  Camping Riviera- Cannobio ,  Camping Orchidea, Feriolo  (and previously at Camping Parisi - Baveno)                                         etc
