Roadworks in Germany

For those of you who are planning a trip to Germany next year this forum already has some advance warnings of ongoing motorway roadworks. At times it appears that the whole of the western German motorway system is being upgrades or repaired. Don't let that put you off going to this beautiful country but if you are planning a trip to the Wurzburg area and the start of the Romantik Strasse please be aware that the bridge over the river Main on the A3 at Wurzburg is being upgraded. Delays are significant and will be ongoing until 2019. If you plan to visit this beautiful area then leave the A3 at junction 70 (to the west of Wurzburg). You will save a lot of time and frustration.

When we visited earlier this year, the area round Cologne was just one huge traffic jam.

To minimise delays always try and Avoid travelling on Fridays and Saturdays whenever possible in summer in Germany. The vast majority of Germans drive to their holiday destinations (upto 80% of holidays are by car) and 20 mile tailbacks are not uncommon. However as Dave advises the country is a wonderful place to visit!

When we came back from southern Austria in late July the roadworks were in full flow.

Standing / crawling traffic all the way from 30km south of Munchen through to Karlsruhe, when we bailed out into France.

Utter nightmare that looks set to last a long time yet!
