Thinking of venturing further afield and staying near Amsterdam and walking into the city if thats feesable? Then a bit of touring maybe 4 - 5 nights. Anyone done this? Advice appreciated!

Not done  the walking into town bit, but have done the Heineken brewery tour, seen the Rembrandts, looked around the Red Light district, eaten rijsttafel, found the brown cafes, and wept at Ann Frank's story. All pretty straightforward.

What exactly do you want to know?

I don't think there are any campsites within actual walking distance of A'dam city centre.  Unless you fancy a really long walk!  We've stayed at Gaaspercamping which is within walking distance of the underground into the centre.

As for 4-5 days touring: where do you want to go?  There are oodles of campsites in Holland, at the seaside, inland, everywhere!

One piece of advice would be to take your bikes with you if you have them.  Cycling is very good there with cyclepaths everywhere.

Camping Zeeburg is 3 miles from the centre.

Depends how far you want to walkwink

    Google is your friend.

PS. It's open all year assuming you are to visit in the near future.

Last time we visited Amsterdam we stayed here http://www.davidklyne.co.uk/camping_het_amsterdamse_bos.htm You can walk to the Metro to take you into the centre or if you have bikes there is a direct route into the City from the site.

Three good campsites have already been suggested,  but for motorhomers there is also the Motorhome Aire called Amsterdam Citycamp - no toilets or showers, no reservations possible,  not particularly cheap, and not at all pretty, just a gravel area surrounded by a security fence  - but is actually within walking distance of the city after a short ferry ride. Details and reviews on line.
