Planning to travel from Lake Como to Interlaken in September noticed the Sustenpass is on my route any problems towing? Does the road close at night?

The Club's invaluable Touring Europe guide says "negotiable by caravans with care, but advisable for small and medium sized outfits only,  not for the faint hearted"

if you are seriously thinking of travelling at night I suggest you take the longer way round using the motorway via the south side of Lake Lucerne.

I remember doing the Susten pass in the late 70's in my MG Midget and Thomson Mini Glen, I think it is a better road now.

Never heard of passes closing at night but wouldn't consider travelling on any during the hours of darkness.

Have towed up and down all the passes and never had a problem over the last 50 years.

Crested the Grimsel Pass last month with 84 BHP and 3,500 Kg all up weight....which is obviously impossible according to most CC members!

Take the easy route and avoid difficult passes. Once you arrive you can take your car and do the "three passes". If you survive the experience you might consider the pass next time!

I would however recommend the Simplon pass from Italy to Switzerland then France. It is probably the easiest and very scenic. Recently upgraded.

Love roller coaster rides and switchbacks but not in a 2 ton car with a7.5 metre, 1.5 ton box on the back. Paragliding, White Water Rafting Doddle, holding up German motorcyclists beyond my risk level !!
