Boff, a very fair assessment.
as you can see from my previous post, we are probably nearer to your 'level' than Merves but can easily go off grid at a THS in spring/summer for weeks without EHU....
since OH had hair cut short again, the need for a hairdryer (sometimes a deal breaker) has been eliminated....so our true 'mains only' arsenal is confined to a Sky+ HD box and the aforementioned bike battery chargers.....everything else is 12v.....or gas.
thats not to say we dont plug in when on EHU which we take when part of the inclusive price, and more so in winter, but we are equally at home without it.
as i also said, we have a 2nd leisure battery (MH and no weight issues) but this isnt really necessary.
yes, off gridding can easily be done for many, many days with a 100w SP and a 'cheaper/larger' gas supply.
once confidence increases, days roll into weeks and.....
for us, the benefits are ma y but mainly twofold.....the ability to use the CCC THS (and CL/CS) network which allows camping much closer to town/city centres than full blown sites and that we can do it for peanuts.

I have a wind up radio but my use is pretty light - to get the news and weather if TV isn't working. It runs on battery too so I could recharge them. Neat little one form Mr Roberts when I found myself in Scotland before they had gone Digital!

I would agree with every word Boff! A Safefill off EBay??? Wow- who's selling a Safefill ? 😂😂😂😂that's a find mate- well done! I think all 3 of us agree that there are various levels for offgrid. With forward thinking sites like Newton Grove in Oxfordshire, you don't have to spend a penny- just go, book a week and see for yourselves. All the folk who are now enjoying the fruits of our labours like Boff, BB, Pippah me and so many more - wouldn't we have just loved a facility like that when we started out? Boff, £400 for all that lot- you're a canny old bugger!! 😂😂😂

I would like to say mine was a result of a patient search it wasn't the first time I looked I found one. There was one on the other week as well but they don't come up often. The only point for consideration is that they should have an inspection every 10years the one on eBay will be about 5yrs old.

Well, if it's anything like a diving tank, it isn't going to worry me. As Safefill are the maximum of 7 yrs old, inspections haven't been carried out yet Vic so until they start, it's impossible to say but I'm sure it won't be a hill of beans!

Just been reading a report regarding the efficiency of Solar panels and the developments that are going on within the industry which is already 60yrs old surprisingly. I would have given it an age of 20yrs tops. Once you have cut your way through all the jargon of Percs, Perls etc They reckon by 2025, panels will be 25% more efficient than they are now. Although the record stands at 26.6% conversion rate - that's light to usable electricity,- the panels produced now if mono crystalline( the most efficient) are around 21% but the production methods will improve to a point where the top absorption rate is achieved on production panels. All good for non EHU.

Yes. With electric vehicles becoming more and more common a campsite of any sort without 240 v. hook up points is a ridiculous idea.

Rightly or wrongly last year I invested in a battery gizmo that stores electricity from the roof panels, I find it very interesting to watch. Anything over 19% capacity on the battery thing and I can run the washing machine or something. In addition to the normal use of solar energy. So they are moving in the right direction. I should be able to read all the input figures on my iPad but haven't managed to link the Internet connection to the shed where the panels are but it feels as though I am saving money! I haven't compared it's weight to a 12v battery but expect it's heavier. Larger too being about 20 x 18 x 4" in size.

Hello again DD and CB. Sorry about that but Daves thread, as useful as it is is not a sticky and I would encourage anyone who has something to say about non EHU to use this one as it IS a sticky. DD, you were talking about Other forms of batteries. I read about Li-Polymer? Is this more stable I wonder.
coffeebreak I couldn't agree more, in fact, apart from the detractors, CT has proved its worth in spreading knowledge and advice in all sorts of fields. This latest one on batteries is fascinating and well worth knowing. This is not, as my wife once suggested' just a bunch of old boys getting together for a bitch" 😂 She now genuinely sees that this is a real medium for furthering knowledge through the experience of others. Yes, CT at its best.

I am on to it! The last thing I need is to return to the camping site to find just a chassis and an axle cooling down!! I have to find out about the charging routine etc and to make sure it's safe. Your input has been most welcome DD. Thanks.

Part of a review left by a guest -"Visited for a weekend Friday evening until Monday, John the owner is very helpful and met us there, it was the first time for years we have gone "off grid" but wanted to try the Solar Panel out we have on our caravan. Had someone in this bank holiday weekend for 3 nights who had a try with our solar unit. Left without me seeing them so dont know how they got on. With the sunny w/e I would think battery charged by 10am!

Hi DD. Newton Grove CL is an absolute Godsend to those who wish to try non EHU. When I did mine it was blind faith. Opened my eyes since though! I can't answer the question re batteries but imI seem to remember from the close ups I saw that batteries were in the unit.

Hedge, it doesn't matter what caravan you have. I'm sure it is absolute luxury compared to the tent you gave up for it. There's nothing quite like snuggling down in the duvet with the rain pattering on the roof. I hope you make the transition to a refillable cylinder- you won't regret it I'm sure.
