Ideas for European honeymoon in May

Hi all,

We purchased our first motorhome earlier this year and have taken it on several trips around the UK. We recently got engaged and plan to take our motorhome over to Europe for 3-4weeks for our honeymoon in May 2018. Does anyone have any advice on routes for this length of trip and this time of year?

Thanks in advance for any advice you're able to offer.

Congratulations. I wish you every happiness.

Now if you tell us where you are going to we will suggest routes to get there, although I would just point the nose of the vehicle south and keep going till it gets warm. Somewhere in Italy perhaps?

    Good wishes.

    Thanks eurortraveller.

We don't have any specific countries/places in mind yet - so we are really open to all suggestions. Italy is definitely an option as they would also take us past some spectacular mountains/lakes on the way.

Are there any websites where people blog/post itineraries of their trips? The only ones I've found are usually one to two week trips.

Blogs are boring! The things that other people do are boring !  Plan your own great adventure.

    Congratulations!

I've just been reading about a trip to Croatia in the Stories Section, you might find some inspiration on there in the Overseas Trips. smile

    Thanks all.

I'm not looking to recreate someone's trip - just looking for some inspiration for a starting point! :)

I'm new to this club too, and didn't even realise the Your Stories section existed (thanks Brue).

Will read up on this and come back when we've got a better idea.

Haven't done it myself, but maybe a trip down Germany's Romantic Road could be included in your plans?

I have obtained a lot of my ideas on where to go from other people's blogs and mine is

    jennyandjohngocaravanning.wordpress.org

We go in May usually for six weeks and mainly to France. If you want mountains my blog of our latest holiday in the French Alps and Lake Annecy may be of interest.

How about Venice? You could stay here and walk to the ferry in ten minutes and you arrive at San Marco by water, in my view the only way to arrive in Venice. Spend a few days and visit all the Islands and the Lido. There is a nice restaurant next to the campsite but the ferries run quite late into the evening so plenty of opportunity for a romantic meal in Venice on one of the canals.

At the risk of boring you (wink) I have a few blogs here on our travels to Italy which if nothing else might help with the planning of your trip and stops en route.

A romantic meal on the canal can provide hours of fun for the mozzies.

For May - go South. Provence and the Med. would do but, personally, for romance and beautiful scenery I would go through Switzerland to the Italian lakes. If you want sea and sand you could start at Maggiore (via Locarno) then head South on the Genoa/Alexandria road and come across to the French Med.

Alternatively go through Switzerland to Lugano then around Milan to Garda from where you could spend a weekend in unforgettable Venice. IMHO you can go to Venice many times and never be bored; it is unique and stunning. To add the romance take a gondola.

When we were standing on the ramparts of the fortress at the top of Monte Titano as the sun was going down over San Marino with views as far as the Adriatic in May last year we both thought that this would be a wonderful place to marry. As it turned out we didn't wait until we went to Italy again this year, but got married in between in Florida instead, but the romantic memories of that evening remain.

And by the way, there's quite a nice campsite in San Marino, too.

San Marino is wonderful. We stayed at Campsite Centro Vacanze years ago and our pitch was on a lovely terrace with a (quite distant) seaview. From there we visited Venice for the day but I must be the only person in the world not to appreciate its charms. Found it too crowded, expensive and rather pongy on a very hot day. Much preferred San Marino.

Hope you find somewhere good anyway - congrats.

I can highly recommend Switzerland, particularly the Lauterbrunnen area in the Berner Oberland.  We were there last June and the whole area is stunning.  The walks are all really well signposted and have the most amazing views. There are highly entertaining cable car and train rides.  It's the sort of trip that you find yourself talking about for months after.

We combined it with some days in the Alsace, France near to Colmar, lovely villages surrounded by vineyards.

The mileage is modest - no need to spend all your time driving.

It is expensive in Switzerland but it's very special.  We stayed at Camping Jungfrau - lots of walks directly from the campsite and public transport from the nearby town.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. The Romantic Road in Germany, the mountains and lakes in Switzerland and Northern Italy all look stunning! I also hadn't even considered venturing as far as Croatia!

Let's just hope the pound doesn't get any closer to parity with the euro, otherwise it will be Weston super Mare!

Congrats again – lots of great ideas already.

Going back to what David K said – Venice is stunning and was mozzie free! We went in May/June of this year taking in Nancy (France), Lucerne (Switzerland, Lake Garda and Verona – Romeo and Juliet (Italy), Venice (Italy) before returning via Innsbruck (Austria) and the Rheinfalls (Switzerland and Germany) and Colmar (France) before the trek home. There is so much to see and do. Enjoy the planning and good luck.

Sounds like a wonderful way to spend your honeymoon. As others have suggested, The Romantic Strasse, Verona and Venice are some ideas for an itinerary.

With the Pound falling against the Euro I can understand your concerns but you'll find using your motorhome in mainland Europe is far cheaper than in the UK. For the route down and to visit the numerous attractive places I'd recommend you use the camper aires in France, camper stellplatz in Germany and the camper sostas in Italy. (download the Camper Contact app. which is excellent). There are numerous stellplatz along the Romantic Road and to visit Verona use the sosta at Porto-Pallio, about 15 minutes walk from the city centre. For Venice I'd use the excellent camp site at Punta Sabbione (Al Bateo), very convenient for the ferry and excellent facilities. May is a good time to visit Italy but be aware that it will be very busy in the Italian Lakes and the Adriatic coast for two weeks commencing 21.05.18 (Pfingsten)
