L'Escala to Santander - Late October
Hi All,
Hoping someone can offer some advice for stopover sites open on/ near the main L'Escala to Santander route for a ferry crossing booked end of October 2017? Travelling in a Motorhome so really hoping to stay near the main roads if possible.
Many thanks,
JeffD

Jeff, if i was heading to L'escala (bay of Roses very nice....) i wouldnt be taking a ferry all the way to Santander and then driving the 8 hours (toll) to the east coast when (say) from Cherbourg is 'only' 3 hours (toll) and 300km longer....and 20 hours less on the ferry and around half to a third of the price.
as you live in Buckinghamshire, any (shorter, cheaper) western crossing is just as convenient.
however, if this is what you want to do, i would suggest you get a copy of the Spanish Aires book, or POI data for your satnav, or the clubs European Touring guide for sites.
for comparison, in the spring we sailed to Cherbourg (from Poole) arrived after lunch, 4 hours to aire in Les Sorrinieres (sth of Nantes), then to Irun (free car park in town centre) then directly to Benicassim in one day (with breaks)....
we travelled the Western side of France because we were travelling in late January and wanted to avoid the higher ground of central France.
good luck.

Hi Jeff, we did a similar journey a few years ago, but opted to travel via Toulouse rather than Zaragosa, and stopped over on a site near Biarritz. Distance wise, both routes are pretty identical, but I think you will find a better choice of stop-overs by going through France.

Have to say I agree with BB, when we travel up from the Bay of Roses we wouldn't consider crossing Spain to get to Santander.
The route we would take would be Roscoff, Caen, or Cherbourg much better choices, shorter less expensive ferry and much easier as BB said to travel up through France even at the end of October.

Thank you for your replies. I understand the financial points but we have decided that we want to try the Santander/ Portsmouth ferry to finish the holiday. We are travelling down the west coast of France on the way.
I hadn't really considered going back through France to Toulouse/ Pau/ San Sebastion but it does make sense and will offer more stop-over options.
Thanks for your inputs and advice.
Jeff
