Hi, my biglong haired but very friendly german shepherd is coming to spain with us but I an reading conflicting things on various blog sites. He.s been to france with us and well received everywhere, as the French appear to be a nation of dog lovers, but, I hear spain can be a little different? I am led to believe he may even be classed as a potential dangerous breed? I assure you , he,s a big softy. so I have prepared to purchase muzzles, for public places, and keep him off the beach. has anyone got any advice or experience of traveling to spain with a big dog, we are going to costa brava,

Ray

Some campsites make restrictions on size of dogs, and some do not admit dogs at all - I believe that Camping Cypsela on the Costa Brava is one of those. So I think you must check in advance with campsites you are planning to go to.

    Hi Ray,

Sorry I have no experience of bringing dogs to Spain.

Apart from the restrictions on dogs on certain beaches in Costa Brava,I as the owner of 2 family loved muts would be concerned about leishmaniasis etc in Spain.

I know this is more prevalent in south of Spain, but just thought I would mention.

Sorry for going off topic slightly, I I do indeed see the attraction of bringing dogs on holidays, as they become part of the family etc.

Best of luck & I hope all goes well.

    Michael

ray - my understanding is that Spain is ok with GSDs - my dog is a mix and if her other half was on the Passport I might have to take a test of my ability to control her!  Having read that somewhere I asked the vet to put just GSD x on the passport!  I haven't been to Spain with her yet but I know I made a mental note that it would be OK with her passport just mentioning the GSD which fortunately she looks like.  Almost no one has guessed her other half is Rottweiler!  I found in France that there aren't many large dogs camping - just a mass of yappies!  It would appear that large dogs are kept as guard dogs not pets.  Of course there are exceptions but that is what I have found.   A man did say my dog was too strong for me as I was coming off the beach in France - and I said No she is my Aide - she pulls me up hills and stops pulling to order.  Just about true although if there was a cat in front she would continue pulling!  They do pull back a bit from large dogs - which is fine by me - we like our space - wink  Have a great time in Spain.  ]

I found this but can't find the competence test I have seen before - no sign of GSDs (I would have a muzzle handy just in case of a grumble - but doubt you would need it)

    Banned Breeds
The following breeds are not banned from entering Spain, but they must be registered within 3 months of entry: Pit Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Rottweiler, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasiliero, Tosa Inu and Akita Inu.
