Austria, switzerland and italy
Hi,
this is my first time on the discussion forum, so please excuse me if I don't get things right!
I am looking for some advice.
we are heading off on our first trip abroad in the motorhome at the end of this month. Travelling via hull to Rotterdam and heading down towards Salzburg. Has anyone done this trip and has anyone got any advice on how far to travel, overnight stops?
maureen.

Welcome to the forum. I have moved your post here as I think you will get more information here.
We spent a few weeks exploring Austria last year, I have a blog on the trip here which might give you a few pointers. We stayed in Salzburg at Camping Nord Sam as it has easy transport links at the entrance which is only 5/10 minutes away. We tend to go down through Germany and enter Austria at Reutte via the Fern Pass. Although for Salzburg going via Munich is another option.

What a lovely tour, Maureen.
Rotterdam to Salzburg is 600 miles - so two long days driving, or three more gentle days, or more than a week if you want to call at places like Luxembourg, Metz and somewhere in Alsace if you would like that route rather than going through Germany. There are good overnight or few day stops at all those places.
It depends how you are for time. Take care.

I think you will get more help especially with respect to tolls in Austria and Switzerland if you indicate the weight of your motorhome. I think you also need to carry an emission certificate because some of the tolls now depend on engine emissions as well as weight and proof is demanded. In Austria you may need a "Go Box"
I would also go via Germany and the Fern Pass but it all depends on the order you plan to go to Austria and Switzerland. Revealing some idea of your itinerary would also help in any advice about stops.
I usually do not like to travel more than 200/250 miles a day but I am rarely in a hurry. I find that gives time to arrive on a site relatively early (more chance of finding space if you have not booked) and leaves time to relax, unwind and perhaps explore a bit.
How long is the trip?

The route described by others above via the Fern Pass is by far the prettiest and it will avoid the traffic around Munich.
The route from Rotterdam will take you past Cologne, Koblenz - both on the Rhein where there are lots of campsites and stellplatz for overnight stops. Then Karlsruhe, Stuttgart, Ulm, Fussen to Innsbruck and then Salzburg. If you're motorhome is under 3.5t the only toll will be a vignette in Austria (about 9 Euros for 10 days). If you want to explore on-route I'd recommend you Googe "Romantic Strasse" and stop at one of the numerous Stellplatz that are near to the town centres.
As far as your question about how far to travel each day; its entirely up to you. If you go at the end of August there will certainly be no need to pre-book anywhere and my advice would be to get the 'Camper Contact' App that will give you thousands of campsites and stopovers in Europe. When you feel that you're ready for a stop simply access the App and it will give you a multiple choice of stopovers within a few minutes drive of where you are.
Good luck and enjoy your trip.

If you go to my website www.joysofeuropeancaravanning.co.uk. You can see loads of information on Tolls, Campsite and Route. Can also send you map and route with Campsites if required. We have been travelling to that part of the world for Over 30 years. Last did it this Spring.

We did the Rotterdam crossing in June and spent the first night just north of Luxemburg, then to Remich for cheap diesel (8 petrol station within a few hundred yards and only 88 pence per litre). From there to Freiberg and then Switzerland (Interlaken). Back into Germany and on to Munich.
From Munich we headed north via Bamberg, Erfurt, Kassel, and back to Rotterdam, a quitter route than via Cologne.
We normally did 200 - 250 per day and stopped early in the afternoon, some site close from 12:00 until 3:00 !
A German 'GREEN' sticker may be advisable.
Enjoy your trip.
