As part of our European tour later this year we intend visiting Venice,Florence and Pisa.we will have our 2 small dog's with us are there any problems in Italy with pets travelling on public transport because not having visited Italy before,we know in Spain we cannot take them on trains or buses, and we would like to travel around Venice by bus and water taxi.

Our experience was that on most (maybe all?) public transport the dog needs to be muzzled.

In general we didn't find Italy as dog-friendly as more northerly countries ...

And the other problem is that Venice, Florence and Pisa are so full of cathedrals, churches, palaces, museums, art galleries, and historic sites- which you won't be able to visit with dogs in tow.

You can certainly take one dog per person on a Vaporetto (Venice water bus) but the regulations say they have to be on a lead and muzzled (although I've rarely seen any with muzzles on). Water taxis are very expensive in Venice and the Vaporetto is more convenient. As others have said, you will not be allowed in the churches with dogs.

Pisa is very commercialised and apart from the tower the town is very ordinary compared to others in the area (eg Lucca).

Depending on what time of the year you go it can be very warm in Venice and Florence so I'd recommend you take plenty of water for your pets.
