Exchanging dollars for euros

We have a few hundred US dollars left over from a recent trip, and are planning to change these directly into euros when we travel to France in September. Any advice on where to exchange for the best deal?

I suspect where ever you change them you won't get particularly good value because of the commission rates likely to be charged. It might be less complicated to change them before you go rather than trying to do it in an overseas bank. You don't have any friends or relations heading for the states in the near future? That would be a good way of off loading them?

Has anybody done what the OP NorfolkHawker has posted as we are in the same position with some US dollars over from a few years back and not much chance of taking our motorhome over to the States... so thinking of changing the dollars into euros in France. If we do as David said you get charged twice and I think I will then lose out !. But would like to here from anybody who has done this.

In my experience buy the euros in france with the US dollars. You will only pay commission once. To get euros here the money exchange will have change dollars into pounds then pounds into euros so you will pay two lots of commission.

you may also get a good dollar rate in france than you would a rate for your English pounds.
