Hi, we are staying in Cherbourg for 3 nights in August before heading south. Wanting to know what are the best World war 2 trips in the area. No more than an hours drive. Many thanks in anticipation

Can you stretch it to ten minutes over the hour?  You really should visit Pointe du Hoc where the U.S Rangers stormed the cliffs, and the tragic American military cemetery nearby at Colleville sur Mer.

If you could base yourself a little further down the peninsular on the east side by about 30 miles you will be in easy reach of lots of WWII sites.

You could consider this campsite http://www.davidklyne.co.uk/camping_le_cormoran.htm very near to Utah Beach and the Airbourne Museum is not far in the other direction.

Or an hour's boat ride from the little port of Dielette (just 15 miles from Cherbourg) for a day trip out to the island of Alderney, the scene of some of the blackest events of WW2 when SS troops occupied the island.
