To Amsterdam, the ferry goes from Newcastle, if it still goes(?) , and is expensive as it is an overnight crossing.

To Europort it goes from Hull, also overnight and therefor expensive.

Cheapest is a day crossing from Harwich to Hook of Holland, we used that this year, out in April, back in June.  We paid £112.60 for car, caravan and the 2 of us, return.  We did however book last October, not sure if that made a big difference though.

    Very nice ships.

As said the Hull ferry can be expensive as its an overnight one. However it depends on where you are going once you get to the other side, we come from Scotland and often use it as we usually prefer to do the longer drive once off the ferry, rather than driving down to Dover.

Ferries in September are always slightly dearer than in say April/May, as AD said a Saturday/Sunday ferry coupled with camping cheques can sometimes give a good rate.

Newcastle to Amsterdam do still run DFDS if you have lots of Tesco vouchers you can use them towards the cost.

When we go over in September this year we are going Plymouth to Roscoff, we have never used this route before but as we want to visit Brittany this time choosing this crossing will put us in the right place.

Sometimes you need to work everything out, like ferry costs, fuel, overnights etc. then compare. When we have done that in the past there isn't usually much in it.

Yes, DFDS from Newcastle (strictly North Shields) leaves for IJmuiden at about 5 every day. The returns ferry arrives for 9. If you come from the North or within easy reach of this ferry, we think it is ideal. It saves going to Dover (fuel, at least a days travel, etc) plus arrive refreshed and off onto the motorway early in the morning.

Regarding prices, they increase rapidly as the week progresses (cheapest Sun, Mon, Tues, both ways) plus, get the basic accommodation and it's cheaper to upgrade your cabin as you arrive at the port if you choose.

We find it both a great start and relaxing end to the holiday but, obviously if you are looking to absolutely minimise your costs you'll need to do the sums.

We use Harwich/Hook of Holland a lot and have found that the prices from Ferries direct are cheaper than the club.  If we use the day time we always book the premier lounge for a few extra pounds.  The ferry gets in to Holland at around 5pm so we always stay at Delft for the first night.

The night time ferry to Holland is more expensive but as it includes accommodation you can just start your journey straight from the dock about 8.30am

We live very close to the DFDS  Newcastle -Ijmuiden  terminal and so find it very convenient and saves us at least three tanks of fuel versus the Dover or Folkstone crossing heading for Bavaria ,Alsace or Italy plus no French AutoRoute tolls travelling via Holland and Germany so the extra cost of the night crossing is more than matched by savings enroute . Bon Voyage!

Totally agree, you do need to  consider  the total cost.....fuel, extra overnights etc......and it certainly depends on where you are going on the other side, and where you are starting from.

We have used Hull to Europort several times, but we often combine the journey to and from the port with visiting friends, so these days we more often use a cheaper crossing and extend the trip.
