Canary Islands
Has any member ever taken a caravan to the Canary Islands or know any
body who has? I know that there are ferries from Cadiz. I'd like to try the adventure

It's just not worth it, especially with a Caravan and not even really with a Motorhome. The ferry cost is huge >£1,500 and that's just to Gran Canaria, the inter-island ferries are then also very expensive. There are few sites and the islands are just not geared up for Caravans. You do see some Motorhomes although not that many as unless you are planning on going for maybe 6 months or more it is just doesn't make financial sense.

We've noticed more and more m/h's are going to Lanzarote each year, most of them German or French, I suspect as they are no longer going to Morocco, the Canaries is the new over winter destination. It wouldn't be my choice I'm afraid as there is little to no provision for them, certainly not on Lanzarote. Where do they empty their toilets, get fresh water, dump waste water. Gas bottles could be another problem, as well as the expensive ferries.

It's the same in Fuerte' , in fact the police are beggining to clamp down on "wild" motorhoming regularly moving people on particularly from beach car parks etc as there are just no facilities. Plenty of accommodation on the islands at very reasonable rates especially for long stays, coupled with abundant cheap flights and car hire there is just no need to take a caravan/motorhome over.

I have very good friends who have lived in Tenerife (Costa Del Silencio) for 26 years. It's very expensive to get the ferry to and from mainland Spain. He drove over last summer to the UK, car only and it was over a £1000. He has also told me about the stories in recent years where travelers mainly in MH's are setting up camp in car parks etc which has resulted in the authorities taking a very strong stand on the subject. I get they impression now that they are not keen on having them on the Island.

If you think £1,500 for a ferry crossing is expensive then the ferry to Iceland takes some beating. I thought I was buying the whole ferry when we went. Including cabin accommodation I paid around £6,000 for car plus caravan and that was 17 years ago! It's even more now. However, because the campsites were dirt cheap, it was still no more expensive than flying, renting a car and staying at hotels, though, so we opted for a caravanning holiday despite the cost.
