Motorway Gantry Warning

Was extremely sceptical about Variable Speed Limits when it was first introduced, but found the traffic flow on the M25 at the Heathrow end improved immeasurably. Latterly on the M62 however, have regularly seen lower speed limits signalled but found no reason as I progressed onwards. Mind you, with a caravan hanging on the back, in general, overall journey times don't seem to be much affected given equality of time of day.

not a keen supporter of them either we were driving home on the M20 a few weeks back when I saw that the battery door had come undone pulled over on hard shoulder sorted on a smart motorway I could see a problem get to next refuge area some one else in it another mile to drive hoping battery stay's in place malc

I don't mind the variable speed limits, but I do get concerned about 'lane control'.
To be told you can use the 'hard shoulder'as a lane one minute and then being told only use hard shoulder for the next junction can be a bit of a nightmare. It sometimes happens junction after junction. The result is, you are either continually changing lanes, or you just 'don't bother using the hardshoulder' lane at all. It can lead to a lot of cars continually changing lanes. Not the safest idea IMHO.

The trouble with 'smart' motorways is the presupposition that it used by smart drivers.
