Motorhome route from Switzerland to Italy
Summer 2017 and we hope to get to Italy from Switzerland. We are looking for the easiest route that does not involve using mountain passes. We would prefer to take the tunnels. Any help or tips would be appreciated
Thanks

There are also rail tunnels where motorhomes (subject to size) can be taken through from Switzerland to Italy on a train. It depends where you are in Switzerland. The rail tunnel from Brig going under the Simplon Pass is the only way of avoiding driving over the pass if you are starting from that part of Switzerland.

The St Gotthard Tunnel is the easiest route. If you're going in August you must pre-book sites around the Italian Lakes, It will be very busy in August but less so in July and September.

St Gotthard as per previous posts. You will need a Vignette or HGV Road Tax at border if over 3.5T as you probably know, no further toll for tunnel itself. St Gotthard is a two way tunnel so you do need to have headlights effectively masked to avoid blinding oncoming traffic. Depending where you are heading for in Italy an alternative is the St Bernard Tunnel (only been over the pass myself) this takes you into the Aosta Valley and on down towards Turin and Genoa for the Cinque Terre or Tuscany.

The route from Basel through the St. Gottard tunnel is simple and very scenic. St. Bernard is also fine. Don't overlook the Simplon pass as it is a fairly easy climb and a great way of getting from, say, Maggiore to Zermatt. You can use the Brig tunnel as suggested but it really isnt necessary.
