It's all about choice , nature and scenery is not just in the UK , if my wife's health was better and I hadn't got the shop I would be over there exploring, but that will have to wait for the momentcool

We too live in Scotland so spend most weekends away in the van on Scottish sites so when we go away for longer trips we like to visit orher parts of the UK this year for instance we have already been to Keswick Berwick and in a few weeks time we will be heading down to Devon for 2 and a half weeks. We do like touring abroad aswell 3 years ago we took the Mhomen to Spain and France for 6 weeks which was brilliant and something we plan to do again we also holidayed in France when we had our tourer and loved it and didnt find it any dearer than UK in face most sites were cheaper

We have a similar plan as Kj.  UK we do in the off season when sites are cheaper and not so busy. We also stop off at places going to and from the ferries. We lived in Germany for 20 years so have seen most of that country  and many of its neighbours.

However we had 2 young boys at the time and there choice of holidays was always by the sea. Nowadays we can take the time to visit the places we like, do what we like and in relative comfort.  Prices in France for fresh food is dearer than UK, to eat out during lunchtime is more affordable than in the evenings, however we are not keen on eating a big meal at lunchtime. We don't  often eat out anyway even at home.

We like to visit different countries it's a nice change most of the time, the weather is usually much better than in the UK and for longer...

Malcolm,  we live in Scotland and while I admit it's lovely the weather isn't reliable. Having a good few days on holiday isn't a gauge of the rest of the year. I like warm sunny days, I like cold sunny days but I hate rain and wind and miserable skies. While working, there was little I could do about it, now retired and not having any other ties we are free to roam where we like  and lucky enough to afford it.

As the young ones keep telling us you only live once, UK will still be around in 5 or 10 years.

Yes but surely if you're retired, Tammygirl, you've got time to wait for the right weather! Granted, if you only have a weeks holiday and it rains all through the week that's your holiday gone. However, if you've got 3 months, you're going to have some sunny days during that length of time, even on the west coast of Scotland.

We had to find another riverside walk today - it's just too hot to head for the coast path! So we went to Dartington Hall and walked along the river Dart to a village called Staverton where there's one of the oldest river crossing bridges in Devon - unfortunately all the land both sides of the river is fenced off so no photos! frown There's also an ancient church dedicated to St Paul de Leon - a 9th century preacher, possibly local, and a station for the South Devon steam railway - it's been used for many films and TV programmes including The Railway Children! The dogs took full advantage of the river to keep cool! (Unfortunately Mrs M had to miss out on a shopping opportunity at Dartington where there are, apparently a large variety of craft shops etc. No way the dos would put up with that! smile

We just had a pot of tea after waking up from an afternoon siesta. The air-conditioner is doing a grand job keeping the inside cool. The evening meal is now cooking. We've stayed indoors all day as it's far too hot to go out anywhere.

The other Boleyn Girl is on Film 4 this evening so we plan to watch that. An interesting historical drama about Henry VIII.

I would have thought the coast would be the coolest place especially if there's a sea breeze and there's always the option of a swim in the sea. However, it looks like you had an interesting day out, Chris, despite the hot weather.

The forecast seems to indicate some cooler weather by the weekend which may give us a break from sitting inside the caravan all the time with the aircon switched on.

Have yet to try the steam train, often spot it going along the Dart. What do you think of Ross Park, we haven't tried it, would it be any good for motorhomers?

Moulesy : Glad you are enjoying your holiday, it's very warm for the dogs,  you are lucky yours will go into the river, Bodie just doesn't do water!  laughing

Very warm again today, had to go for an X ray this morning, then we went to the caravan in storage,  just a few bits needed taking over, also wanted to fit some locks on the steadies. OH also spotted that dealers had left some wires exposed when they fitted the mover.

Work this afternoon, nice long cold drink now, very welcome.

I remember last year when the aircon was out of order, I spent a fortune on cold drinks, diet coke, zero sugar tango etc. Not any more! Now I can relax in aircon comfort with a cup of tea, thereby saving money! Incidentally, we noticed tea is down in price. I guess it doesn't sell so well in this hot weather where people without aircon prefer cold drinks! We bought 160 tea bags of Yorkshire tea for £2.50. That's less than 2 pence per tea bag. How much did you pay for a drink of lemonade? A lot more than 2 pence I bet!

We're really liking Ross Park, brue, one of the few commercial sites we've used which lives up to its publicity! wink And there are several MHs on site. I think if we wanted to spend a lot of time on site we'd pay the bit extra for one of the "premier" pitches which appear to be a bit more spacious and private. The area we're in is a bit enclosed and opposite us is a seasonal pitch - nothing wrong with that, very pleasant couple - but every afternoon when we get back they have a gathering with a group of fellow seasonal, so it's a bit difficult to relax or read as the conversations get a bit distracting! (That's just an observation, not a complaint, in case any of them should read this! sealed)

The only downside for us really is that there's nowhere to walk to direct from the site, but then we knew that before we came!

Yes, can thoroughly recommend it and will keep the map for future reference to suggest a nice pitch if you ever decide to come. smile

You would be alright if you bought Tesco everyday value sugar free lemonade. That would only cost you about 3p a glass.😉

Yes, we get through quite a bit of tapwater, keeps costs down!

We have been buying Lidl cola zero, 35 cents for 2 litres here, cheaper than bottled water, about 4 cents per glass.

Possibly because we live in the beautiful scenery, we get used to it and take it for granted, so we look for something different, or more dramatic.

Of the countries we have visited, I would say Switzerland, Austria and Norway  have more dramatic scenery, lots of areas of France too as Steve said, and Italy also has interesting scenery.  No doubt there are many attractive areas in countries we have not visited.

But scenery is not everything, there are interesting differences in wildlife, plants, culture, food, even shops, plus historical sites to visit too.

I don't think you are really thinking things through Malcolm!

Even retired people do have some commitments or constraints on when they can go away......children, grandchildren, hobbies, house, garden, and for many of us, avoiding school holidays when sites are crowded, and expensive.

When we go away, UK or abroad, we have a plan which is usually made many months ahead.  For example, our ferry tickets were booked last October, and in UK we always have a tour route in mind, and we almost always book sites in advance in UK.  That is one reason why it is so nice to come over here and just go as we please instead.

We cannot sit about watching the weather forecast to see when it will be good weather, so we go where we think we might have a reasonable chance of good weather.

Our trips are timed to fit in with when we are needed for pet sitting duties, or when we are needed to do little DIY jobs for our children.  Going away does take planning when other things have to be considered!

Another morning Welcoming at the Cathedral. We had some lovely visitors in this morning. Also 25 people turned up for the free guided tour. Luckily it was one of the more experienced guides on duty this morning so he coped. Also a group of primary school children who were delightful. After that a meeting at the College. I still go to one occasionally. Nice to catch up with everyone there. The Prinipal of the College was awarded the MBE in the Queen's birthday honours list last weekend. She deserves it, she works so hard on behalf of Adult Education.

Lovely photo of Harry and Lady cooling off in the water moulesy. Hope Mrs m's eye is improving.

Another week of appointments...... OH had a bit of a scare had to have an ultrasound scan to check her liver as part of the ongoing checks after her radioactive eye treatment. After much probing, rolling and humming by the clinician he eventually found her liver! apparently it can move about but the fact he took longer than expected gave her a fright thinking that he had found something unpleasant but no the all clear was given!

Both she and my son will be going into their respites on Friday, I will be taking the van for a break and a sleep!

We don't seem to have any of those commitments. There's no family or pets anywhere near us. Just the two of us, part-time work at Pizza Hut and the caravan and that's it!
