Can't give you much up to date info as it is over 20 years since we visited but we can thoroughly recommend it. You haven't said what your outfit is but we did it in a MH with opportunities for wild camping. There are some amazing scenic routes and also some great ferry trips along the fijords as part of the journey. We drove down into Gerainger and the views where amazing with the cruise ships looking so small from high up in the mountains, getting bigger as we got nearer. We did the top of Norway route too where the snow was as high as the van even in June. We stopped for lunch at the top and sat out in shorts and t shirts surrounded by snow looking down on a frozen lake.
It was expensive though and we picked up fuel at each opportunity. Ferry crossings are part of the journey. Enjoy.0 -

Went in Sept 2015 via ferry from Northen Denmark 99euro one way .
If you go you need to register a credi/debit card for the automatic toll charges. They initally took 300 Norwegian Kroner about 30 pounds, we travelled up as far as Tromso that 300Nkr covered all our tolls we got back 5pence credit we had not used. Should you exceed you initial amount it is done again automatically, refund of any credit is within 28 days of you telling them you have left or your end date on registration.
Fuel was cheaper than UK but every thing else expensive would I do it again yes fantastic scenery plus the aura bora.
