I arrived at 11am. at one the several sites called Camping Robinson in France (just who was he?) and found no one there. We pitched camp, had a bite to eat,  and went out for the afternoon. At 5pm I went to the office and the two ladies there said ,Oh hello, would you like a coffee?

Not a bit like a UK site - here in Cornwall one site nearby would have offered me tea, scones and clotted cream !

When we used to use Gandspette regularly on our way to and from this country, we were very late one time and rang them to ask if they had a pitch (the year we had our last four hour delay in Paris).  They said Yes, and when we arrived they told us they had also booked us a table at the restaurant, as we usually had a meal there, and though serving finished at 9.00 pm, if we went straight there after pitching, they would be happy to see us!

I'm sure there are good and bad arrival experiences all over the UK and Europe. It's nice to hear of good experiences.

On the other hand, it took us a bit longer than expected to get to one site we intended to stop on in France and they had gone to lunch for two hours. As there was a barrier we had to wait.

It wasn't a problem, we had our lunch while we waited and waited.

On another site we had to search around it to find the owner as again there was a barrier and nobody on reception. Again not a problem.

What I am saying is there are pros and cons to all systems. There is no right or wrong. 😀

We arrived at a France Passion site, Champagne farmer, mid afternoon and there was no-one at the house.

We parked up and a couple of hours later called again at the house.

The man apologised for not being there earlier and offered us a glass of champagne as an apology.

    We didn't refuse.

€6 to stop the night, including hook up, and a free glass of champers - and at your nearest C&MC site ..............

Re long lunches we have found Germany to be the worst offenders and now have a German language site guide that lists the lunchtime closuresl

David, I would be grateful if you could let me know which guide that is. Thank you.

It is also not likely to happen in the Uk on "club"sites as there are plenty of complaints when some one "thinks" a pitch has been reserved for an arrival,  ,although if any one turns up on spec at most sites in the UK off peak as AD has done "over therewink" on a site that is known,  then the questions and answers would probably be the same, except you would pay for the "period" in advance which if notice given would be refunded if stay cut shortcool

Will do. It's handy to know when sites close so that you can plan your trip accordingly. Thanks.

In some ways its a bit irrelevant to us as we tend to tour so tend not to go back to the same campsites time and time again. Having said that the only time I have not got the welcome I expect was on a site in France!!!

Is there anything wrong with that?  What is it that you don't like about promoting it?  I know some people are not keen if a thread about UK sites is 'diverted' to mention sites in Europe, but this thread was started by someone who prefers touring in Europe.  Are the opinions of those who prefer to tour elsewhere to be censored and not allowed to post about anything, anywhere, except in the Touring Overseas section? Don't forget if none of us went to Europe there would be absolutely no room to even get a pitch in this country?wink

To be honest, for those holidaying with children, from personal experience we found it was almost impossible to actually 'tour' without booking in the UK, during the school holidays, which is why we started touring in Europe in the first place.  For sixteen or so years of taking our caravan for school holidays in Europe, we have only ever booked one site in advance.  Since we started touring outside of school holidays we have never booked in advance, and only rung in advance on one occasion when we knew we were going to be late - my experience in a post above.

We have had warm welcomes in this country - but not recently as we haven't arrived anywhere unannounced and unbooked.

You don't have to be a regular visitor, going back year after year, to be a valued customer, see the reviews on the link

We tour both UK and Euro and I've adjusted in Europe to the curfew hours so unlike many I don't get up at Sparrowfart and fly to the next site to get there before the start of curfew.

Likewise I never arrive at a UK site before midday, just time the journey, no hassle really.  This year we are going to Scotland and have already booked 3 sites but will book the rest when we decide where we want to be, just like the continent really

To be fair OP not quite. In this country it would be unwise to just turn up, usually best to ring ahead. Also almost impossible to do in the peak season.

Neither of these are necessary on the continent, even at peak, as long as you stay away from the touristy bits.

I am not saying it is better, just pointing out that it is different.

first time on the ile de re, arrived at the highly recommended La Grainetierre, horrified to see the 'complet' sign outside......

had a word with Eric the owner, who was equally horrified that we hadnt realised that his site (and most of the island) is busy for long periods...

    so, whats to do.....?

    a) advised to go away and try and find somewhere else

    b) invited to stay in Eric's private car park/garden as the turnover of pitches was quite high, presented with EHU point and invited to make use of all facilities (pool, bar, restaurant, etc) until a pitch becomes free, all of course at no charge, other than what we spent at the bar etc.

    obviously we chose a)wink

we were in Erics garden for two nights and then he got us onto a nice pitch where we stayed for a couple of weeks.

needless to say, we are always happy to returnsmile

Also, first trip to La Croix Valmer, Selection Camping, ordered a take away meal from the restaurant....there was a small delay in the kitchen as it was a popular option, so Maitre sat me down and brought over a pichet of wine and we had a drink and a chat while i waited for the meal to be cooked....

custom obviously valued in both placessmile

oh dear JVB, yet again youve 'missed the point' which you seem to do on a very regular basis, especially when its being made about good sites/service away from the CC network, or it has anything to do with Bailey caravanswink

heres a tip, look at the top of the page and youll see this thread is about 'good check in experiences' with David asking whether his experiences might be available at 'UK sites'.

ive just added a couple of my own 'check in experiences' which, like David, werent likely to be offered to me at the UK sites i visit.

so, perhaps try a little harder to read the OP and you'll find this forum much easier to understandwink

No real answer as usual except to try to play down that anything other than UK is good, you do really need to get a real lifewink
