Electric Bikes in France
We bought our first Motorhome in January we had previous owned Caravans for many years and yes there are good and bad points . So we have bought two Electric Bikes. We have the Bike Rack the Ferry Company know we will be taking the Bikes this August so now i am asking is it safe to leave the bikes chained up when we go into the shops. We don't have much choice if we need to get some supplies . Any help would be great ..

We take our electric bikes to the supermarket. This has been mainly in Germany and Austria where the supermarkets are not that large. In France we tend to park the motorhome in the carpark of the large supermarkets and one of us goes off and does the shopping.

Arrivakid, That sounds like an expensive bit of kit. While I think that nine times out of ten your new bikes will be safe in rural parts of France if locked and chained, I would read the terms of your insurance very carefully just in case - what valuation of cover, what sort of lock, what sort of chain, and locked to what? Regards and good wishes.

We used to be a little concerned too.
Two locks, through both bikes and to an immovable object is as good as it gets...except, we do always try and leave them near/amongst other bikes.
If yours are insured check your conditions re 'Bicycles must be locked to an immovable object' This often does not include a MH or any part of one.

its interesting in that it seems only to be the Brits that do this....us included.
holiday in Spain this spring, every visit to supermarkets i locked the bikes up.....everyone else, Dutch, Germans just park up anywhere and go into the shop....
perhaps they dont get crime at home like we do and this leads to a different mindset?

But we have a little shop in this village selling KTM electric bikes at around £2500 each. If we had a couple of those we would lock them, even in your village !

We had our bikes parked outside a small supermarket in Inzell in Germany all locked up of course. Germany lady next to me parks a very expensive electric bike with just a cheap wire cycle lock through the front wheel on the the cycle rack. I know which one I would have stolen!!!

I don't treat the security of our very expensive road bikes, albeit not electric, any different in France or anywhere to what we do here at home.
We use Kryptonite cables with quality padlocks. These like just about any other locking system will be beatable by someone going out with bolt croppers but I believe will meet our insurer's requirements if fix to something itself secure.
Kryptonite also do a chain lock which with heavy electric bikes might be tolerable to lug around.
