A satellite system is really the only option. How far south are they going? If it's something like the Canal du Midi an 85cms dish would be needed. Further north you might get away with something smaller.If they are hiring a boat the only option would be a free standing dish. You could buy the whole system for about a £100 from somewhere like B&Q. The list would be
Satellite Dish
TV
Satellite receiver (unless already in the TV)
Tripod (plus something to peg it down)
Signal Finder
Compass (I have used an App on my smart phone)
Cable

You can of course watch UK TV on the internet so long as you have a fast enough connection - a wifi booster might be a option

Until recently FilmOn seemed to be the most mentioned but they have gone to subscription only.
Two mentioned since are;
watchbritishtv.com and watchallchannels.com

Yes, or Kodi on a laptop or better still sign up with a VPN provider then you can watch anything anywhere.

Don't forget the OP mentioned that TV reception was going to be for a boat, I assume when moored up. Unlike a campsite there won't be any readily available WiFi. There is of course mobile data providing you have enough data to watch TV and a strong enough signal.

Don't know where the boat will be mooring but a reasonable chance with a booster of getting wifi some of the time. For other occasions a 3 12gb sim will give about 24 hours of SD tv so circa £1 an hour. Else as you say a huge dish is needed.
