After a very long stay at Conil in Spain, at La Rosaleda, we are now heading to the south of France via Cordoba, Valencia, Barcelona etc.

Can anybody advise on a site at Santa Elena called los Despenaperros just north of Cordoba off the A4. Also Ribomar at Alcossebre or bonterra Park at Benicassim.just north of Valencia.

Any other suggetsed sites would be appreciated.

Thanks

stayed a few times at Benicassim, nice site, good location, etc.

also, try Sitges for visiting Barcelona (el Garrofer site) though Sitges os lovely in its own right.

Bonterra Park at Benicassim is a well run site. Excellent location.

We have always preferred Playa Tropicana at Alcossebre, mainly because, we gather, the road to Ribamar is a rough track. Playa Tropicana is a very attractive site, across the road from the beach, has first rate shower blocks and a  well stocked supermarket and a good restaurant on site.

I've stopped at Camping Despeñaperros at Santa Elena several times.   It sits quite close to the motorway on the southern lip of the Gorge and is situated at the far end of the last/first street in the village.   The toilet block is in the centre of the site and is built to a high standard with beautifully tiled showers and cubicles.   For some reason the site owner omitted to fit the toilet seats!   There's a good electric supply however the power boxes are in need of some attention.   Each pitch has its own tap and waste water point with a removable cover.   There's a free site-wide wifi connection.

If you can afford the time it's worth staying at least two nights and driving through the mountains then talking the circular walk to view the Cimbarra Falls.

I fully agree about Despenaperros  (Santa Elena). In fact it ranks as one of my favorite inland sites.  Excellent walking directly from the site, and well worth several days to explore the area.  Try to get a pitch on the RHS (as you enter) overlooking the valley and facing south.  (I am perplexed by some of the negative reviews on the ACSI website). Good free WiFi.

Another excellent  nearby alternative is Camping La Albolafia at Villafranca de Cordoba.   Very friendly, huge hedged pitches, walk to interesting village, and easy distance to Cordoba if you do want to visit (or just for the LIDL / Carrefour). Final access is down a track which seems off-putting on arrival, but is no problem whatsoever.   We arrived for one night, and ended up staying 4 on our way home. The ablutions are immaculate, although the hot water to the showers is quirky.  Excellent free WiFi.

EDIT: best approach to Depenaperros is now to come off at the main Santa Elena exit and then immediately follow the new link road which parallels the motorway northwards (rather than going into the town).  Turn right at the first junction. Site is immediately on the left.

Thank you very much for your helpful replies.

We are at Santa Elena, we arrived on Monday, I haven't replied before cos the wifi was acting up.

This a very good site in a stunning location. A bit of motorway noise but no problem. We visit this area to see the Iberian Lynx at Sierra du Andujar and have stayed at Villafranca before but much prefer here although a little further to travel.

I would thoroughly recommend this site for a few days. You have to love olive trees though, apparently there are over 100 million in Jaen Province!

Thanks for the good wishes and advice David and the same good wishes to you and yours.

We will leave here on Friday and make for the Valencia region. Recommendations noted. Thank you all.
