O2 Roaming
Hi,
Not sure if this is the right place to post. Our mobile phone network is O2 & they've sent me an email stating that from mid June we can use our monthly call & text allowances in the EU at no extra cost. This is good news because in the past when we've been abroad its cost us a fortune to ring home.

Yes good news. But the charge of 4p. a minute in the recent past to phone UK from mainland Europe was hardly costing a fortune !

same with our Vodafone account, must be the start of the European alignment dispensing with roaming charges....

It does sound great, but be very careful not to exceed your 'package' limit on calls, otherwise it will go up to the 'standard rate' charged by your mobile provider, and this can be 40p per minute once free call limits have been exceeded. The standard charges for extra texts, picture messages, and other add-ons can also be quite substantial.
We use our mobiles, in France, quite a bit more these days, and it doesn't take more than a few 'above your allowance' calls, or picture messages, to rack up your bill, as I found this month!

I didn't realise they were charging you that - was that on top of a big monthly charge too?
I just take a PAYG phone overseas with no monthly charge, no rental, no £2 connection charge, and really just a simple 4p a minute for phone calls, mostly to ring restaurants to book lunch !

O2 charged £1.99 per day for 100mb of data but it was only applied if you used data. Alternatively, you could chose to pay for your data at 5p (I think) per mb. It was not mandatory to sign up to the daily charge and needed a bit of homework to calculate how much data per day would be needed to establish the most cost effective way of doing it.
Whichever method was chosen, the 4p per min for calls and 1p per text still applied.
Does anyone know what the data charges are under the new arrangement?

Our O2 phone on a monthly sim only contract has a bolt on. This gives you up to a 120 mins of calls and 120 texts a day and also data as well. However, that is limited to £43 a month equivalent, so if it's 5 p a meg, that's only a total of 860 meg a month. This cost £1.99 a day in France, if used. So if you keep data roaming turned off, you will not be charged unless you make or receive a call. Received texts seem to be free. Not had an email from them yet, so no idea what happens after June / July.
My phone is on EE through BT mobile. We had an email from them the other day saying, from 1st June I could use like at home in France and some other countries, for calls texts and data. Although they did set a 15 gig limit on it if you had an unlimited plan. Currently in France it is 5p a min to make a call, 1p to receive and 4.3p a meg for data. Once you can use your UK plan abroad, if you go over your limits it is charged at a much higher rate.

perversely, my Vodafone package includes picture messages when overseas.....but not at home on UK 3G.
when in the uk, i might use our home wifi for picture messaging, obviously this is fine, but i forgot to have wifi on the other day and sent a couple of imessages with pictures attached when using 3g....got charged!....despite being well within my data limit....

EE have allowed me to use my UK calls and text plan at no extra cost in the EU for the last 3 years. Data is still charged at £3 per day for up up to 500MB daily, the charge only being made if data is enabled. We used to have an Italian mobile phone on a PAYG basis when in Italy but the EE deal is far better value.

Precisely. I understood the charge within EU had been capped at 4p/min for quite some time, and that is certainly all we payed over winter this year on PAYG.
Ironically, one of our '3' PAYG phones is still on an old tariff (for other benefits). That phone is 26p/min within UK, but still only 4p/min elsewhere in EU!
