Maggiore
Hi we are a couple going to Maggiore for the first time. I would like to know if any one has any camp site recommendations,we like acsi sites as we are going at the end of this month.We also like to be near the water.Also does any one have a recommendation for a route from hoek van holland including stop overs?

Campsites..Camping Conca d'Oro is popular and lakeside.
Route..straight through Switzerland via the St Gotthard tunnel is the direct way but will cost you CHF80 for two vignettes.
Stopovers..depends whether you want to drive 2 x 300 mile days or 3 x 200 mile days or go sight seeing along the way.
Enjoy yourselves either way.

We visit Maggiore most years and to us the most attractive town is Cannobio which is very accessible from Locarno. There is an ACSI site which you will find in the book but the best sites are Val Romantica (1 km up the river) or Riviera right on the lake. About 35 Euros per night.
We did stay at Conca d'Ora last year. We find the area less interesting than other parts of the lake but the site facilities, particularly the sanitary blocks, are outstanding.
Although we always approach through Switzerland (Basel) we often return via the SImplon Pass which is an easy trip. We stayed near Zermatt on the way back and had a magnificent rail trip up towards the Matterhorn on a cloudless day.

we're heading to Lugano later in the summer and have planned our route from Europoort (Just across the river from Hoek van Holland) to head down to Antwerp, Brussels, through Luxembourg and across the french A4 from Metz to Saverne. Camping Portes des Alsace in Saverne is a useful site which is in both Camping Cheques and ACSI, it's about 345 miles from Europoort which we have previously found to be perfectly doable on a Sunday when there are no HGVs on the road. Our ferry docks at about 08:30. We tend to split the return journey up a bit more, usually with a final stop in the Luxembourg or Belgian Ardennes being a comfortable distance from the port.

My 300 mile point would be Camping Brabois at Nancy - but if I were tired I would stop earlier at the municipal site in Metz. I never stop overnight where I had planned at breakfast time. So many choices!

We have stayed at Conca d'Oro and it is a very nice campsite on the edge of a small village. It's a good base if you have a car. Now that we have a motorhome I expect we would be looking for somewhere a bit nearer the main Lake attractions. Some pictures of the site here:-

Thankyou all very much,I have put the route in via michelin It goes via germany and switzeland .we have to put up with the vignettes but we do not like the toll roads unless we have to,We have a month so we intend to go straight down there then meander back.

Another one who recommends Cannobio. We stayed at Camping Riviera as it is a flat mobility scooter ride to the village, the pitches are typically small as are many in Italy but its on the lakeside and we loved it. Romantica looks lovely, there is a path to the village (about 1km) which looks a nice walk to the village. We travelled via Switzerland and stayed at camping Lazy Rancho in order to visit Interlaken. We also stayed at camping Delta in Locarno which is close to the pretty town. A nice site but the most expensive we've ever stayed at. Camping Brabois at Nancy is nice as is the municipal st Metz. Another option is to stop at one of the many sites in Alsace on the wine road, all depends on which route you take. Have a good time.

If you can get as far as Strasbourg then you can easily reach Maggiore in one day. We always stay at the municipal site in Obernai and it is worth a couple of days stay because you can walk comfortably in to the attractive town or get a train into Strasbourg.

Another vote for Cannobio and Valle Romantica where we have stayed three times. Whilst it is possible to avoid the vignettes we would not as it's so much easier.
Maybe stopover at Camping Tumbergblick at Karlsruhe at app 350 from the Hook as you will have an early start.

Hi,
an alternative site (depending on how far down the lake you want to go is Camping Parisi, at Baveno. We visited last September, and our notes say:
"Great location but very crowded. Ten minute walk into Baveno. Bus to Stresa. Ferries operate from Baveno to other lake destinations including the islands
Facilities: excellent
WiFi free, but limited range
Price: Euro 18.00 including electricity and tourist tax (ACSI rate). Showers free."More comments in our blog:

Agree been here several times pitches ar tight but good location and easy walk to the. Lake ferry where you can get about without the car ?
