Off to France in August ..have looked at breakdown cover through caravan club ....£353 for a month. Not sure whether to go for it or take a chance. Our Motorhome is 14 years old and extremely well looked after. Interested to know what you folks do.

Can you add breakdown/recovery  cover to your annual Motorhome insurance?  If that policy is with this Club you can not, but with most other insurance companies you can. And cheaply too.

Surely not £353? That's more than your annual insurance should be - including breakdown cover. There are plenty of other options.

That does seem ridiculously high. Do you have breakdown cover in this country? Can you extend to Europe? Do you have a bank account that offers breakdown cover? Our Nationwide Flex Plus does, I checked out that cover, turned out to be with Brittania who we already used. Checked out with NW and Brittania that our motorhome, giving height and length, was covered too. It was so we made a saving. Our cover can be extended to Europe for a fee.

I'm sure you're you'll find something at a reasonable price. Our motorhome is 15 years old and well looked after.

It's expensive because of the age of the van

ADAC, the German equivalent of the old type AA and RAC (clubs looking after the interests of their members) will cover your van for breakdown cover, both for the UK and Europe, for a whole year, for around £100 depending on the current exchange rate.   It will also cover any other car you are driving, or in which you are a passenger, and offer some limited 'travel insurance' type benefits too.

See ADAC Partner Plus membership costs for information, and if you're interested in taking out the cover then you need details of the best and easiest way to do it.  It can't be done on line because of differences with German debit and credit cards.  It  can be done by phone,  to English speakers at the office, and if they are not available they will ring you back: ADAC Nordheim on tel; 00 49 22 14 72 74 44.

We have had insurance with ADAC for several years, as do many other British caravanners and those with motorhomes.

OK. Understood. Whilst you could chance it and call a breakdown service to get you to a garage and just pay whatever it costs the other problem would be repatriation of the Motorhome if it couldn't be repaired easily. You could just leave it, fly home and return when it's fixed. Might cost less than £350 to get there and back if the worst should happen.

Of course, it depends what level of cover you want. Do you want to be put up in a hotel, all expenses paid, whilst the van is repaired etc. I would just try an Internet search plus all the usual breakdown services - AA, RAC, Green Flag, Mondial etc. They all tend to have different conditions.

I should have said, in my earlier post, that ADAC don't have an age limit for the vehicle(s) being covered, so your fifteen year old motorhome should be no problem.

We have ADAC cover for 11 years now and it is second to none.  We have used it in three countries in Europe and the UK each time with excellent service.

The ADAC Office that is assigned for taking on British Members is actually Regensburg tel no 00 49 94 15 23 44 not Nordheim as Val mentioned as they have not enough staff to deal with the amount of Brits that join or renew their policies yearly. I was contacted by the lady there explaining this.  Valmobviously does not know this.If you wish to have copy of ADAC Full Cover in English just email me on dvphillips14@hotmail.com your email address and I will be pleased to send it to you.

The lady at ADAC to email is ann-katrin.zintle@sby.adac.de or amanda.moser-wickles@sby.adac.de   The second lady is not in the office every day but ann-katrin is.

I was quoting from a post on another forum where someone joined via the number given and was very happy with the way his call was dealt with.

Apologies for posting the wrong information, but thanks for giving the correct number.
