European Accident Statement form
I have recently read an article in the Daily Telegraph about having to carry the above form whilst driving in Europe and that it is legally-binding and should be completed in the event of an accident. I have been touring in France for over ten years, fortunately without mishap, and have never heard of this form. Have I been risking possible trouble without one and should I ensure that I take in future? I have never seen any reference to it before in anything I have read about travelling in Europe.

I carry one whenever I go abroad, but I'm not aware of it being a legal requirement. However, it serves as a very good means of recording all the details of an accident at the time of the event. It's surprising how your memory fades by the time you get back home.

ChrisRogers, like you I have had an old form for many years. In fact I cannot remember when or where I got the form.
Thank you for the link to the latest form, that will be put in amongst my documents for our trip at the end of this month to France.

Two years ago I warned members about the French version of this form, Don't sign it because once you have it is legally binding. So if you make a mistake at the scene of an accident you will not be able to make changes. Despite me providing photos of the scene which clearly showed the French driver was at fault the insurers interpreted an inadequate sketch by him. My own insurance told me it would be too expensive to persue in the French courts, and they would not rule in my favour. But the gods were on my side because the French insurance made a mistake on the claim and had to close the case, I was not liable in the end. I had to bring the error to my insurance, so they were not on the ball either.
