German motorway road works

For those of you heading towards Slovenia, Croatia and the NE corner of Italy this year here's an update on the A3 roadworks between Koln and Regensburg.

You may recall that I posted advice about the section of the A3 around Wurzburg last year. Whilst in general the A3 is clear of major roadworks as far as junction 65 (Wertheim - a good start for the Romantic Road) going south, the roadworks south of J65 are still causing major delays, particularly when driving west, despite that fact that there are 3 lanes west and only two lanes going east. The delays are a result of bridge works over the river gorge.

I'd advise you to think of an alternative route when driving west - homeward bound (at least for the next 12 months.

Is it likely to be easier if you travel this section on a Sunday. Planning on going from Rudesheim to Sesslach and Michelin route seems to take me on that road. (Never done German roads before)

We are planning to use the  A61 and the A8 do you know if these have roadworks on them too?

    Thanks

Saturdays and Sundays will certainly be quieter on the A3 because of the restrictions on lorries at the weekend.

Re the A61 and A8, I'm afraid there are sections of roadworks on most German motorways in the west of the country at the moment but they're well managed and apart from the section of the A3 around Wurzburg we've encountered very few problems elsewhere.
