Sites near Dieppe
Hi All,
I am going to the Loire Valley area in June and have made arrangements for the journey down staying a short didtance from Rouen and then down to the Loire. But, I am finding difficulty in finding somewhere near to Dieppe on the return leg, I need somewhere fairly close to the ferry port for our journey back. Has anyone any suggestions for a car and 'van. Thank you.

We stayed at Camping La Source for a couple of nights (ACSI 1338).
The access road is narrow and we were allocated a pitch (but were pleased with it). There is a river / stream running past the site and goats, geese etc in the field across it. Toilets were basic but clean. We found it very pleasant but might not have done if it was busy.
Camping Dieppe Vitamin (1349) seems to get good reviews. Access to it is rather awkward and when we arrived, the site was closed for a two hour lunch and we weren't allowed in. So really cannot recommend it.

It's a long time since I was last in Dieppe and I can't give you a first hand report, but Camping les Deux Rivieres gets good reviews which are worth looking at.

We were going to stay at La Source but found the owner (may have changed since we were there) very rude and left within half an hour. Something we have never experienced in France before having stayed in excess of a hundred campsites there. I am glad Ian had a better experience than we did.

Thank you for your replies. I will look into your suggestions. I did try to book a pitch at Camping Vitamin, but they wanted a deposit and full payment beforehand. I tried to pay via BACS, but my bank wouldn't accept their details and after a few emails it still wouldn't. So, I was thinking I might just turn up, afterall it is an ACSI site.

I have stopped off at La Source (20 mins from the Dieppe ferry terminal) several times a year for the past 5 years (off peak) for a couple of nights and really enjoy the peace, the heated pool, the ducks, sheep, and goats just 20 yds away across the river, and the visiting tradespeople are also very friendly. I have always found the manager, Herve Legrand and his wife utterly charming and helpful.
I'll be there again on Saturday en route to La Rochelle!
The riverside Camping Municipal at Beaumont sur Sarthe, North of Le Mans is spotless, relaxed and a 5 min walk to the small delightful town. It is about 2 hrs from Dieppe so maybe not near enough to Dieppe for you.

BTW - I never ever use autoroutes in my m/home and avoid Rouen like the plague, being keen to get out into the peace of France asap. Chaotic Rouen gives me the Willies!! I head S from Dieppe on the N27 turning onto the D929 at Totes towards Yvetot, then D131 then D490 and head on to Brionne and continue South however I fancy.

There are two sites at Wimereux both ACSI one a little on the outskirts camping au petit INdien the other a municipal one I think where you could walk to buy bread in the morning. That is close ish to Dieppe unless you are catching a dawn boat?

Are those roads suitable hor an outfit, I'm asking because it is a D road! And thanks for the information from everyone.

The D roads are negotiable for an outfit (better than our B roads and more like our smaller A roads) but the main issue is the French love of roundabouts which can make touring very tedious. Every small town and village seems to have 4 .... one at each cardinal point on a sort of ring road but if you decide to go straight through the town/village there are often speed humps and pinch points which make for very slow going. I'm never in a hurry in my m/h and just toddle along at around 45 to 50mph stopping overnight at an Aire or site wherever my fancy takes me.
I've never towed a caravan, (just occasionally trailed a sailing dinghy or motorbike). I wouldn't use D roads other than perhaps for 20 or 30 miles to transfer from one N road to another.

Not only roundabouts but the ever increasing use of speed bumps make towing in rural areas a bit of a pain. On the whole I have found very few roads difficult and have even accidentally tried a few C roads. The lack of traffic makes everything so much easier. I am talking Brittany and Normandy in my experience.

I have paid before via the bank and had no problem (except the bank charge!), it is the way the site put their details down and when I asked for a simpler way, it got more confusing. Plus they wanted a deposit and then the remainer later, but at £9.00 a shot for bank charges I decided against!
It looks like I will have to take a risk and just turn up (I usually like things sorted out beforehand).
And thanks for the info about the C and D roads, I think I will avoid them with the 'van.
