Desenzano del Garda to Verona
Planning on staying at Camping Village San Francesco at Desenzano del Garda in our motorhome next month. We want to visit Verona by public transport. Does anyone know the best way to do this?

When we stayed there (not the same campsite, would have been too busy for us) we got the train into Verona and also on another day into Venice.
Arriving by train into Venice is probably one of the very best ways to arrive. On the train from Decenzano to Verona we were sitting opposite a lady and her grand-daughter, with some chickens in a basket (they were taking them to market) who insisted that we share their food! An experience not to be missed!

Not sure I can agree with that. Whilst arriving at Santa Lucia station is an interesting contrast stepping out of the station it does not really compare with arriving by water into San Marco?

Hi Martatin, Buses leave from very close to the site, and I think go to Verona, and there are train stations at Desanzano and Peschiera.
For the bus you have to buy the tickets in advance and the site may have them or will be able to tell you where to get them.
Not used the website that et mentioned but have used the Tren Italia website.

Well, it's a long time since we were there, and we've stayed near Salo, further up the lake on the west, and at the top of the Lake, Apologies, but I don't think my site recommendations would be up to date and I'm sure that there will be others along with some recommendations!!!
I may be wrong, but I thought the Sirmione area all looked too busy, and bustling, and we were glad we had chosen to stay in a somewhat quieter area. However, we thought Lake Garda (and other nearby lakes) were beautiful We had a lovely holiday there, except for the very last few minutes in Italy, when had a very unpleasant experience with macho Italian police (armed) which has quite put us off going back ever since!
And David, you're probably correct, but not being a good sailor, I'm glad we went by train. We got the local water bus (Vaporetto) from just across from the station right down the Grand Canal to St Mark's Square, seeing all the grand sites along the way, which was the bit I really enjoyed. Again, this is a long time ago, so I'm not sure that this very cheap service still exists. but if it does it's worth exploring.

Hi Martatin, We have stayed many times on Garda but except for a couple of nights, when our site of choice was full, have always stayed at Bella Italia.
Probably not Val's cup of tea as it is very big and bustling but we have had some wonderful holidays there.
We are caravanners but have visited a couple of times with MH friends who thought the sites position was pretty much perfect as you can walk into Peschiera, along a very attractive path by the lake, in about 15 minutes and then you can get the train or a lake boat for trips.
ACSI has quite a few sites around the lake but we much prefer the PDG area. We have stayed on Bergamini but only for a couple of nights and had a look at San Francesco but preferred BI. Campsite Butterfly may be worth a look as it is the closest to PDG for you with a MH.
If you are really lucky, and it would be a lot easier to achieve with a MH, then you may get a lakeside pitch.

If you Google it you will see there is a direct train service which takes 27 mins.
We used to go to the opera at Verona whilst staying at Moniga del Garda with the caravan. OK to park with a car but not sure about a Motorhome although the site should know. Nice city and well worth a visit, particularly to the arena if there is an event on (the opera season is in the summer). You will need a cushion! (I think you can hire one).

Last year we stayed at Camping La Cà in Padenghe sul Garda, which is just up the road from Desenzano and can thoroughly recommend it. It's quiet, relatively small and offers splendid views over the lake, especially if one is lucky enough to get a pitch right at the lakeside. The only downside is the relatively steep access if you pitch close to the lake, but that shouldn't be a issue with a motorhome.

We have stayed at Bella Italia and according to Google Earth its about a 2 kms walk to the station. Bella Italia is a massive site, in fact more of a holiday complex. It won't be everyone's cup of tea but it is very convenient for Peschiera del Garda with easy access to Lake Steamers and the town. There is motorhome parking in Verona see this link here

We were at the same site last August & drove to the station (Takes 30 mins) at Desenzano (big free car park at the back of it - use street view) having booked on trenItalia site before we went to Italy. It was easy & a great day out
Even did it again but this time to Venice
enjoy

Why not stay overnight at the Motorhome Sosta that's about 15 walk from the Verona Arena (the motorhome sosta is in Porto Pallio). It's easy to get to, secure and ideal for visiting the city. We've used it for the last 4 years when going to the opera.
