Places to stop on on the A55

Hi, We are staying at Lamb Cottage near Northwich, Cheshire for a few days before travelling on to Tyddyn Du in Penmawr. Google tells me that the journey is less than two hours, but I have to allow at least this to access Tyddyn Du after 2pm. I will join the A55 at Chester and have never been on this road although I do know it's a good dual carriageway, but are there any large lay bys or suitable places to stop so I do t arrive too early? I am towing a 25 foot caravan with an Isuzu D max so it's a long outfit.

    any chance of a later departure from Lamb Cottage?

    There are a few places you could stop although there are not many large Service Stations.  

    When the A55 joins the A494 that comes up from the M56/Queensferry route you will shift over a lane to continue on towards Conwy. Just after shifting over there is a Shell filling station where there is a coffee stop. Lorries seem to find a way to park. 

    If there is no room then continue onwards until you pass the turn off for Holywell and there is a large lay-by as you make a slight incline. 

    Your next possible stop, without coming off the A55, is just after the turn off for Bodelwyddan (Glan Clwyd hospital) where there is a service station and petrol stop. 

    If you need any provisions then come off at Conwy/Llandudno Junction stop and take the Llandudno exit. At the next r'about (about 100 yards) there is a Tesco where you could probably pull into.

    You may find that you won't need to pull over as the A55 is unfortunately notorious for hold ups. Hope you manage to avoid these and good luck.

    You dont say what day you are travelling but the A55 gets very busy, Ok us locals avoid it at all costs on bank Holiday weekends......!

    There is a large layby on the (notorious for caravan accidents) Rhuallt Hill.   If you make it down the hill in one piece wink  you will pass St Asaph and the next turning is for St Asaph business park. If its the weekend you could probably loiter on one of the side roads there......

    When you are settled in, drive back to J 17 and turn left to the beach for some nice walks. I would also suggest a drive up the west side of the Conwy valley, There is the new surfing centre at Dolgarrog, woolen mills at Trefriw, dutch pancake house at the water gardens at Rowen and of course Bodnant Gardens on the east side of the river near Tal y Cafn. You might even see me in the museum of armoury, over the road opposite Conwy castle's front door.
