A75 to A7 towing

Will be heading south on A71/A75 and quite keen to cut across to A7 somewhere south of Lyon but apart from heading to St Etienne (as suggested by Tammygirl) then a detour north again on A47 which would go against my instincts, can anyone suggest a route that is ok for towing and add interest to our journey. Anyone towed on D1082? Thanks.

D1082 is twisty but fine. Best to aim to join the A7 at junction 12 as it's tedious going down through Tournon and Tain to pick up junction 13.

We often go that way having left A71  at junction 11 and gone on via St Pourcain sur Sioule (good overnight site) and on via Roanne to St Etienne and then the D1082.

Having used both of these two routes over the years I think the A47 is the easier and quicker but if you have the time and want a change of pace  then the D1082 is fine

We've used the D1082 in a MH once, but unfortunately it was very misty and low cloud all the way, which didn't make for a nice journey.  Couldn't see far in any direction!  That's probably why, after that, we've always used the A47.  It's much quicker, but in good weather I'm sure the D1082 would be quite scenic!

How far south on the A7 do you need to be?

We frequently use the A75 from Clermont Ferrand, and often 'cross-country' towards the Ardeche or Provence, and tend to use the N102 - not the D1082.  This goes from just north of Brioude via the Le Puy by pass, (the N88) then continue as the N102 towards Aubenas and onwards to Montelimar.  It's perfectly towable and a very scenic route for the most part.
